Slugs Block Out the Spartans

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball won its first 5-game match of the season over visiting N.C.C.V.L. member San Jose State University. The win brings the Slugs record to 6-4 (2-2 NCAA).

After losing the first game 27-30 UCSC battled to win game 2, 34-32. With the momentum of game 2, the Slugs won game 3 30-26. The Spartans were able to force a game 5 after winning game 4, 24-30.

To start off game 5 it was all Santa Cruz. Tyler Madden put away the first ball of the game and led the Slugs to a quick 8-2 lead. Madden had 5 kills in game five with no errors, 17 kills total. But, it wasn't going to be all UCSC. Strong serving by SJSU's Billy Fowler (25 kills) and Barry Ivers (16 kills, 2 aces) put the Spartans back into the match.

It proved to be the Santa Cruz blocking that made the difference. The Slugs earned 6 of their 20 blocks in game 5. Jesse Garber had 6 blocks, Joseph Su and Bryan Shires each chipped in 3 blocks. Eric Reid added 7 digs behind the strong Santa Cruz block.

The Slugs' next home match is Saturday, February 19 versus Santa Clara University.

Slugs Baggie the Aggies

DAVIS, CA -- UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball team moves to 5-4 (2-2, NCAA) after putting up a wall against N.C.C.V.L. rivals UC Davis Aggies.

"This match was important for us," said Coach Jonah Carson. "Davis is consistently one of the best teams in League [N.C.C.V.L.] and our play against them is a good barometer for where we stand at this point in our season. I was really pleased with our blocking and defensive strategy for this match." As he should be, the Slugs racked up 16 total team blocks for the match. In addition, they converted several easy defensive points that were forced by the successful blocking.

It wasn't just blocking and defense--The Slugs were putting away their fare share of balls. UC Santa Cruz hit an impressive .416 for the match (44 kills on 72 attempts). The Slugs started out on-fire in game 1 hitting .393 (16 kills on 28 attempts) and then improved in game 2 to .529 (12 kills on 17 attempts). Santa Cruz hit .370 in game 3.

Setter Jesse Bazarnick had 33 assists helping Freshman Bryan Shires to 10 kills. Fellow Slugs Tyler Madden, Junior, and Joseph Su, Freshman, each had 7 kills.

The Slugs' next match is versus San Jose State at 7 pm on Saturday, February 5 at the West Field House of UC Santa Cruz.

Successful Slugs Sweep Competition

The UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball team swept its two NCAA D-III opponents over the weekend. The Slugs defeated Steven's Institute of Technology last Friday in 3 games and SUNY - New Paltz last Saturday in 4 games. This brings the Slugs record to 2-3 (2-1 NCAA).

The weekend was a breakthrough for the Slugs who started the season losing their first three matches. The Slugs lost to University of the Pacific (NCAA D-I) on January 5, 0-3 in the West Field House. Then, the Slugs lost twice in 5 games to fellow N.C.C.V.L. members Cal Poly San Louis Obispo and Sacramento State.

The difference this weekend was UCSC's attacking out of the middle. Dane Gilliam (Sr. 2004 AVCA All-American Second-Team) hit .684 on 19 attempts with only 1 error versus Steven's. He then bettered his performance the next night versus SUNY-New Paltz and hit .773 on 22 attempts, again with only 1 error. Freshman middle Jesse Garber was errorless against the Steven's block and added 5 kills on 7 attempts. Then, he too added more the next night with 8 kills versus SUNY- New Paltz.

Other statistical leaders for the weekend include Jesse Bazarnick who had 44 assists versus S.I.T. and 48 versus SUNY-New Paltz. Eric Reid chipped in 7 and 8 digs respectively. Tyler Madden lead the Slug attack against S.I.T. with his 17 kills and had 12 against SUNY.

Men's Volleyball Preview 2004-05

The team and coaches are extremely excited about the 2005 season. Momentum from attending the Molten Final Four last year has carried into this year's season. Highlights of the upcoming season include: joining the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL), hosting 14 home matches, and taking a trip to Dubuque, IA.

In the quest for another Molten Final Four appearance, the Slugs will play several NCAA D-III opponents. They will host SUNY- New Paltz and Steven's Institute of Technology the weekend of January 14-15. In March they will travel to Dubuque, IA to play in the Clarke College Invitational. The Clarke tournament will determine the at-large bid for the Molten Final Four.

With a strong core of returnees and the best recruiting class the program has seen, this year's Slugs look stronger than ever. Five returnees make the core. Senior Middle Blocker and 2004 AVCA All-American Dane Gilliam as well as Senior Libero Eric Reid have both taken on important leadership roles. Outside Hitter Charles Cooper, Middle Blocker Darren Soby and Libero Matt Ward add a level of experience that the Slugs have missed in past seasons. Slug fans should expect great performances from incoming players. Freshmen Outside Hitters Bryan Shires, Art Mueller, and Joseph Su, are all quickly adapting to the collegiate game. Tyler Madden, a Setter who transferred from Santa Barbara City College, is quickly adapting to his position. Freshman Middle Blockers Dave Henderson and Jesse Garber are battling to fill the starting middle position. Additionally, Freshman Setter Alejandro Quan-Madrid, Sophomore Defensive Specialist Mike Buchanan and rookie Opposite Tom Jin Joo are working to add ball control to the squad.

The UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball team will be coached by first year Head Coach Jonah Carson, a UCSC Alumni and former volleyball athlete. Coach Carson teaches English at Aptos High School, coaches the Varsity Boys team there along with running his own boy's club program, Bear Volleyball. Co-Coaching with Jonah Carson is another former Slug and volleyball team captain, Selene Teitelbaum. Coach Teitelbaum, a previous assistant for both the men and women's teams, is the current Head Coach of the UC Santa Cruz Women's Volleyball team.

Slugs Come Out Swinging:
Make Final Four Bid

The Slugs had their final home match of the 2004 season, against NorCal rival Cal Berkeley. It was also senior night, sending off one senior, Outside hitter Nick Brockman.

"We wanted to end this year on a good note, and send our senior off with a victory. We accomplished both, and in good fashion," Coach Hosack comments.

Indeed the Slugs did come out swinging, with the team hitting a whopping .443 for the match. Nick Brockman, Sam Fullerton, Alex Minneboo, and Jason McDaniel all had double digit kills, and helped us blast past the Bears of Cal. "Not only did we hit well, but we blocked extremely well last night," coach Hosack comments. "I think we had somewhere around 17-18 blocks, which is really good against a strong hitting team. I was real proud of the way my guys played last night."

The Slugs not only finished off with a win, but they also accomplished something they have never done before, earned a spot in the Molten DIII National Championship Final Four.

"We have come close a couple of times, but never put it all together like we did this year. To earn a spot takes a huge amount of work, dedication, and believing in yourself and your team. This is a very nice way to finish off this season. I have put my heart and soul into this program, and it feels good to be recognized for it," coach Hosack states.

The championships take place at Eastern Mennonite University, located in Harrisonburg, Virginia on April 16-17. "We should be seeded #2 in the tournament, and will face a NECVA team in the semis most likely. I am looking forward to this experience, as I am sure the boys are. We will just go in there and perform our best and let the chips fall where they may."

Slugs Beat La Verne for Driver's Seat to Final Four

For the first time since 2001, the UCSC Men's Volleyball team defeated DIII West Coast rival the University of La Verne 3 games to 1 in front of a raucous crowd of 250 at the West Field House. The scores for the match were 30-28, 30-24, 27-30, 30-23.

Kill leaders for the Slugs were Nick Brockman and Sam Fullerton, each with 14 kills, and Jason McDaniel with 12 kills. The match evens out the series for the programs, putting them at 1-1 for the season against each other. The AVCA, who makes the decisions for the Final Four matchups, will make the decision at the end of March. The Leopards have won the DIII Championships in 1999, and have been to the tournament the last 3 years in a row. UCSC has never reached the Final Four, and is looking to make its first trip ever this year. The Final Four will be held at Eastern Mennonite University, in Harrisburg, Virginia.

"It was a great win, and I am very proud of my guys. We have come close a couple of times in beating them, but just missed the mark by a few points. La Verne is a good, solid program, and to beat them, you are looking at beating one of the best." Coach Hosack comments. "We played the worst match of the season the first time we saw them, and it showed. We knew we were better, and we have been preparing since that day to beat them the next time we saw them. Our hard work has paid off, and we are in the driver's seat now for the Final Four bid."

Hosack further comments "Two things ring true: It is better to lose at the beginning of the year, then at the end, and we are peaking at the right time. You don't want to peak at the beginning of the year."

The Slugs' next home match is against Hope International University, this Friday at 7pm in the West Field House. Admission is Free. The Slugs defeated Hope in their first meeting, winning 3-0.

Slugs Fight Hard Against Top 5 Teams in Country

The UCSC men's volleyball team played its toughest road trip in history this past week, taking on then ranked #1 in the country UCLA, then playing #2 ranked Long Beach State, and then #5 ranked UC Santa Barbara. The trip took 4 days to complete, and along the way, made a stop at the taping of 'The Best Damn Sports Show Period', eventually making a screen appearance for the team.

"What a week," head coach Jay Hosack comments. "We played the best of the best, and earned a lot of respect this past week. Usually we are in and out pretty fast, but this year we fought in each match, and were leading in a good number of the games during the matches. To score in the 20's against those teams in each of the games says a lot about the caliber of the guys right now. We are definitely on an upswing, and at the right time too!"

At the time of this writing, the Slugs have moved up to #4 ranking in the country with this past week's efforts, a few notches above where they started the year.

The Slugs take on Santa Clara this Friday at 6:45pm in the West Field House, admission is free for all who come. Also, UCSC will take on DIII West Coast rival the University of LaVerne on Feb 28 here at UCSC at 6:45 pm at the West Field House.

Slugs Go 3-0 on a Tough Week

UC Santa Cruz Men's volleyball, currently ranked #5 in the country, won all three of its matches for the week, topping off Cal 3-1, Santa Clara 3-2, and devastated UC Davis 3-0.

"It was a good week for us," Coach Hosack comments. "We did not beat Cal last year in our two meetings, we split with Santa Clara, and Davis just beat us up last year. This year, we lost a tough one to Davis in the semi's of a preseason tournament, but my guys were gassed. They just got done playing two really hard matches (One against Cal, with UCSC winning 2-1) and the other against Fresno State."

UCSC came out a little slow for the year, starting out 1-4. Although three of the losses were against top Division I opponents (Stanford, UOP, UC Irvine), the 4th loss was against DIII rival LaVerne.

"I would like to see them now, seeing as how we have turned a corner. They are definitely in the driver seat, but we see them again at the end of February, it might be a different story then...."

The win against Davis was the first since the 2002 year, but UCSC has never beaten them in 3 straight. UC Davis is currently ranked #1 in Northern California for the NCCVL, and was the runner up in last year's NIRSA championships.

UCSC takes on perenial powerhouses UCLA (Wed, 2/4 at Pauley Pavilion), Long Beach State (Friday, 2/6 in the Pyramid), and UC Santa Barbara (Saturday, 2/7 in Roberson Gym) this week in a grueling 4 day road trip. All matches are at 7pm.

Sophomore Outside Hitter Simon Davenport is among UCSC's top returners.

Men's Volleyball loses to Cal Baptist

UCSC-- The Men's Volleyball team lost to Cal Baptist University on Monday night at the West Field House, losing in four games, 20-30, 31-29, 30-16, 38-36.

Sophomore Outside Hitter Simon Davenport lead UCSC with 14 kills. Freshman Setter Matt Reynolds had 28 assists.

Despite showing great skill, the young UCSC team struggled at times against a Cal Baptist team with tremendous size. 6-10 Opposite Shaun Dyk had 14 kills for the visiting Lancers, and 6-3 Outside Hitter Ivan Topchiysky also had 14.

The team plays its next match Tuesday night at home against Findlay University. Match start time is set for 7:00 PM.

Men's Volleyball opens season 1-4

The Men's Volleyball team has opened their season with a 1-4 record, with two of those losses coming against Division I teams.

The team opened its season at Stanford University playing well but eventually falling short in all three games, 30-18, 30-19, 30-24. Sophomore Opposite Brian Gallagher lead the team with 10 kills.

The team's home opener came against Pacific University. Prize recruit Freshman Setter Matt Reynolds dazzled the home crowd, finishing with 38 assists. 32 hitting errors would doom UCSC, however, and the Banana Slugs fell against the Tigers in three hard-fought games, 30-25, 30-25, 30-22.

The team then traveled to the LaVerne Invitational, where they went 1-2. Last year's Western Regional Champion La Verne beat the Slugs dispatched UCSC easily, as did NAIA powerhouse Hope International. UCSC salvaged the trip by beating Division III rival Stevens Tech in four games, hitting on a season-best 34.8% of their shots.

Top: Senior Outside Hitter Mike Rubin, was the first Banana Slug to be named AVCA Player-of-the-week. Below: Freshman Outside Hitter Simon Davenport was a major hit in his first season, with 198 kills and 2.30 kills/game.

Men's Volleyball: Year in Review - UCSC finishes ranked sixth in the AVCA; narrowly misses Final Four

The Men's Volleyball team had one of its best seasons to date in 2002; finishing the season 15-12 with a 6-4 record in Division III play.

That record was good enough to earn UCSC a #6 National Ranking; just narrowly coming up short for a bid to the Final Four Molten Division III Men's Invitational in New York.

Without question the highlight of the team's season came at Nickel City Invitational in Buffalo, New York in March. With their Final Four hopes on the line, the Slugs went 5-0; winning the tournament outright. Three of their victims had been ranked in the top 10 in the AVCA Division III poll, just behind UCSC's #6.

After returning home from New York, UCSC continued its strong play at home, dispatching visiting teams from UC Davis (3-2) and UC San Diego (3-0). The win over UCSD is the first time in team history the Banana Slugs have defeated the Tritons. UCSC finished its season with eight straight wins.

"My guys really learned a lot the last couple of months of our season." Head Coach Jay Hosack said. "I really believe that if we were to see La Verne and NYU again now, things would be much different. I am very proud of my team. The progressions we made as a team and as individuals was tremendous."

"I am eagerly waiting for next year to see what we can accomplish."

With the end of their season, the Slugs see the careers of four outstanding seniors come to an end. Senior Outside Hitter Peter Butler led the Slugs in kills with 346 on the year, and a kill-per-game average of 4.27. Fellow Senior Outside Hitter Mike Rubin was second on the team with 259 kills and a 2.98 kill/game average. After a stellar performance at the Buffalo Tournament, Rubin became the first UCSC player to be named AVCA Player-of-the-week. Senior Middle-Blocker Kirt Peterson had 111 kills, and led the team in blocking and kill-percentage. Finally, Senior Middle-Blocker Jonah Carson also played in nearly every game, finishing with 110 kills and a 1.53 kill/game average. All four of the players have been standouts with the program for many seasons, and their veteran leadership will not be easily replaced.

Complementing the Seniors was a tremendous group of underclassmen. Freshman Outside Hitter Simon Davenport made a big impact in his first year with the team. Davenport's 198 kills and 2.30 kills/game both ranked him third on the team. Sophomore Setter Jesse Bazarnick led the team in assists, averaging 10.68 a game. Bazarnick also hit .295 on the season. The team was led in digs by Junior Defensive Specialist Dan Turner.

Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding season!

Senior Outside Hitter Mike Rubin, seen here in action against Loyola-Marymount, is the first Banana Slug to be named AVCA Player-of-the-week.

Men's Volleyball finishes season with eight-match winning streak; await word from AVCA

Heading into the Nickel City Invitational in Buffalo, New York, the UCSC Men's Volleyball team knew it had to make a statement to keep its playoff hopes alive.

The Banana Slugs succeeded in a big way; going 5-0 and winning the tournament. With all five wins coming against Division III opponents, the team's record is now 6-4 in Division III match play.

UCSC defeated teams from Medaille (3-0), Clarke (3-2), Roger Williams (3-0), SUNY New Paltz (3-2) and host D'Youville (3-1). SUNY, Roger Williams and Clarke are all ranked in the top 10 in the latest AVCA Division III poll, just behind UCSC's #6.

After returning home from New York, UCSC continued its strong play, dispatching visiting teams from UC Davis (3-2) and UC Santa Barbara (3-0) at home. The win over UCSD is the first time in team history the Banana Slugs have defeated the Tritons. UCSC finishes its regular season with eight straight wins, bringing their record to 15-12.

UCSC's strong play was lead by Senior Outside Hitter Mike Rubin, who was named AVCA Player-of-the-week for the week ending March 25th. Rubin helped the Banana Slugs to a 4-0 record during that period, including the three wins against top 10 teams, in the Nickel City Invitational in Buffalo, N.Y. Rubin averaged 3.50 kills, 1.43 digs and 0.25 blocks in 16 games. He charted 56 kills on 114 attempts and was held to under .300 hitting percentage in just one match. Rubin tallied a .384 hitting percentage in a three-game win over Medaille. He contributed a double-double 19 kills and 10 digs in a five-game win over No. 7 Clarke. Rubin earned 12 kills, five digs and three blocks in a sweep of No. 8 Roger Williams. He completed the week with 19 kills, five digs and four aces in a five-game rally over No. 9 SUNY Paltz after the Banana Slugs lost the first two games.

The team now eagerly awaits word from the AVCA on whether they'll attend the Division III Men's Volleyball Final Four and compete for a National Championship.

Men's Volleyball looks forward to promising 2001-2002 season

UC Santa Cruz brings back a wealth of talent from last year’s successful squad. With 5 returning starters, and a host of hot new talent, the Men’s Volleyball team looks stronger than they have in many years. Some of the returner’s are middle blockers Jonah Carson and Kirt Peterson, outside hitter Mike Rubin, and coming back after a year of studying abroad in Costa Rica, Peter Butler, and Libero Dan Turner.

"We have jumped in size by an average of 3 inches, and player caliber. I am really excited to see what happens this year. We are definitely going to make a run for the title this year. " Coach Hosack comments.

Some of the incoming recruits that Hosack has brought to the program are 6’4" outside hitter Simon Davenport from New York, and 6’3" opposite Brian Gallagher from Corona Del Mar.

"These boys are strong players already. This is my first real recruiting class. It takes a couple of years to establish a good class of recruits, and I am real happy with these guys." Coach Hosack adds.

Joining the strong class is 6’2" outside hitter Garrett Leahey from Westlake, and Chris Peterson from San Francisco ( Chris also plays for the Men’s Soccer team at UCSC ).

This year has a host of traveling dates, with 5 Southern California trips, and a trip to New York to play 5 matches with other Division III teams. With a National Title on the line, the Slugs look to take their veterans and newcomers to new heights this year.
