Slugs Step on Ducks, Sweep DIII Opponents

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UC Santa Cruz Slugs (now 2-1, 2-0 NCAA DIII) made their mark in DIII competition with a win over Stevens Institute (Hoboken, NJ) in four games (30-27, 27-30, 30-22, 30-17).

Senior Setter Matt Reynolds had an excellent match finishing with 60 assists and dishing all five starting hitters to double-digit kills. Outside Hitter Bryan Shires (So.) lead all hitters with 18 kills. Tyler Madden (Outside Hitter, Sr.) finished the match with 15 kills and was able to help the Slugs take a commanding lead in the third game with his decisive serving. Brice Dahlmeier (Outside Hitter, Fr.) added 10 kills.

The most notable performances came from the Sophomore Middle Blockers Dave Henderson and Jesse Garber. Henderson hit .591 with 14 kills, 1 error, 22 attempts and added 2 aces. Garber had 10 kills for the Slugs versus Stevens to add to his 12 kill performance against Medialle. For the two matches, Garber hit .500 with only 3 errors in seven games. Eric Reid (Libero, Sr.) passed well in the match and recorded 11 digs.

The Stevens Ducks were lead by Chris Bock 15 kills.

Next up are vs two other UC teams - UC Davis on the 20th and Berkeley on the 21st.
