SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The #4 UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball team is on a 4 match win streak after defeating UC Davis (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) and UC Berkeley (25-20, 27-25, 25-18) over the weekend.

In the Davis match, Bryan Shires (Outside Hitter, So.) and Tyler Madden (Outside Hitter, Jr.) each had a team high 8 kills. Tyler Hinz (Outside Hitter, Jr.) was a spark for the Slugs during game one. With the team down 11-15, Hinz added some much needed passing and energy; he served an ace and added 3 kills with no errors to help the Slugs take the game. Hinz finished the match with 6 kills.

Eric Reid (Libero, Sr.) earned 6 digs in the win. Senior Defensive Specialist Matt Ward also added 6 digs and some excellent serving. Freshmen Dan Wilson (Middle Blocker,) had 1 kill, an assisted block and served an ace to finish the match. The Slugs hit an impressive .890 for the match and had 13.5 blocks.

Versus Cal, Matt Smiley (Setter, Fr.) notched his first collegiate start in the absence of senior setter Matt Reynolds who was late due to school responsibilites. Smily dished 21 assists to give the Slugs a two game lead over Cal. In game three, Smiley had 7 assists and with the Slugs in the lead 11-9, Reynolds entered the match and closed out the Bears 25-18.

Bryan Shires (Outside Hitter, So.) again lead the Slugs in kills with 11. Junior Outside Hitters Tyler Madden and Tyler Hinz each added 6 kills. Again, a freshmen ended the match; Chris Konish (Outside Hitter) put the ball away to give the Slugs game three, 25-18. The Slugs earned 16.0 total blocks and hit .359 for the match.

The Slugs play San Jose State this Saturday, Jan. 28. Previously scheduled to be played in San Jose, the match will now take place at UCSC, 7pm.
