| Men's Volleyball Preview 2005-06 The UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball Team looks to put together another successful season in 2006. The Slugs return eight players from the 2005 team including five previous starters. Leading the group of returnees are four seniors: 2005 Co-Capitan and starting libero Eric Reid is joined by fellow starter Tyler Madden, opposite hitter, and libero Matt Ward. Matt Reynolds, starting setter in '04, returns to UC Santa Cruz for his senior year after a year abroad. Reid, Ward and Reynolds were members of the 2004 Slug team that attended the Molten Final Four. Other returning starters include sophomores Bryan Shires, outsider hitter, and middle blocker Jesse Garber. In addition, the Slugs return junior Mike Buchannan, outside hitter, and sophomores Dave Henderson, middle blocker, and Art Mueller. New to the UC Santa Cruz program are eight freshmen. Coach Jonah Carson commented, "These players will have an immediate impact with this team." Outside hitters Brice Dahlmeier, Chris Konish and Lucas Pols look to fill an open starting position. Middle blockers Dan Wilson, Chris Lee and Max McDaniel plan on making their presence felt. Libero Jeff Hogg and setter Matt Smiley will raise the level of play on the court. "This might be the strongest team, top to bottom, that we've had," added Coach Carson. Come support the Slugs in their first match at Stanford, January 4. The Slugs play at home January 10 and 11th versus Steven's Institute and Medialle. |
