Men's Volleyball Go 5-0 at Slug Dome Invitational

After the best start in program history, the Slugs are currently ranked #2
in the AVCA DIII Poll and Tyler Hinz (6¹2², Sr., OH.) was named the Division
III Men¹s National Player of the Week.


#4 Stevens Institute ­ Friday, 9 am
The Slugs beat Stevens Institute in their first match of the Slug Dome
Invitational. The Slugs won in five games, 33-31, 30-25, 22-30, 26-30,
15-13. Middles Jesse Garber (Jr.) and Austin Einhorn (Fr.) each had 11 kills
in the match; Garber served 2 aces and Einhorn chipped in 1. Both setters
Matt Smiley (So.) and Eric Rowell (Fr.) captained the Slugs during the
match.

#8 D¹Youville ­ Friday, 2 pm
The Slugs defeated D¹Youville in 3 games, 30-16, 30-23, 30-26. The Slugs hit
.415 while outside hitters Bryan Shires (Jr.) and Tyler Hinz (Sr.) each had
12 kills; Hinz hit .580 for the match. The Slugs had help from all four
middle blockers. Austin Einhorn (Fr.) had 6 kills with 0 errors in game 1
before he was replaced by Dan Wilson (So.) who chipped in 3 kills, 0 errors.
Middle Jesse Garber had 5 kills, 0 errors, in game 1 before being replaced
by Max McDaniel (So.) and his 4 kills.

#3 Carthage ­ Friday, 7 pm
After winning the first two games, the team persevered in the fifth to
defeat rival Carthage College, 30-25, 30-23, 21-30, 22-30, 15-13. The Slugs
hit a solid .300 for the match. Key hitting performances came from junior
outside hitter Bryan Shires, 20 kills, and junior middle blocker Jesse
Garber, 14 kills. Outside hitters Tyler Hinz (Sr.) and Art Mueller (Jr.)
each had 11 kills. Freshman setter Eric Rowell had 60 assists as well as 3
blocks and 15 digs. The Slugs had 17.5 blocks.

#13 Medaille ­ Saturday, 2 pm
UC Santa Cruz, Fighting Banana Slugs, defeated Medaille College in 5 games
30-16, 26-30, 27-30, 30-16, 15-9. The middle attack of sophomore middle
blockers Max McDaniel and Dan Wilson made the difference in this match.
McDaniel earned 12 kills, 1 ace and 4 blocks while Wilson put away 19 kills,
only 1 error, and 3 blocks. Setter Matt Smiley (So.) had 56 assists, 1 ace
and 3 blocks. 5 outside hitters, Hinz (Sr.), Shires (Jr.), Mueller (Jr.),
Dahlmeier (So.) and Konish (So.) all had at least 5 kills.

#6 New York University ­ Saturday, 7 pm
The Slugs defeated NYU in 3 games (30-26, 30-21, 30-22). Senior outside
hitter Art Mueller lead the Slugs with 16 kills on 21 attempts, hitting .714
for the match. Mueller was unstoppable in the third and fourth games
crushing 12 consecutive kills without an error. Middle blockers Jesse Garber
(Jr.) and Austin Einhorn (Fr.) had 7 and 8 kills respectively while outside
hitter Bryan Shires (Jr.) had 8 kills and opposite hitter Tyler Hinz (Sr.)
added 12. Freshman setter Eric Rowell had 48 assists on the match and helped
the Slugs to a .468 match hitting percentage.
