Slugs Defeat Juniata College
SANTA CRUZ, CA—UC Santa Cruz Men’s Volleyball won their Division-III season opener against Juniata College. The Slugs won in three sets with the following scores: 30-28, 25-20, 25-22.
Senior Opposite Hitter Shane Yablonka led the team with 17 kills (0.349 pct). Senior Middle Blocker Thomas Davidson recorded 8 kills (0.438 pct) and 7 Blocks on the night. Junior Outside Hitter Mauro Salinas lead the defense with 15 digs. Senior Setter Paul Leon contributed 41 assists on the match.
From the start of the match the Slugs managed to take control of the momentum by providing a near impregnable force at the net. Led by Senior Middle Blocker Thomas Davidson, the team totaled 14 blocks on the match! Strong serving coupled with a tenacious defense allowed the Slugs to keep long rallies alive and ultimately take the match.
This win brings their overall record to 1-1 (1-0 D-III).
The Slugs scrimmage upcoming opponent, UC Berkeley, at home on Saturday Jan. 21, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.
