Men's Volleyball loses to Cal Baptist

UCSC-- The Men's Volleyball team lost to Cal Baptist University on Monday night at the West Field House, losing in four games, 20-30, 31-29, 30-16, 38-36.

Sophomore Outside Hitter Simon Davenport lead UCSC with 14 kills. Freshman Setter Matt Reynolds had 28 assists.

Despite showing great skill, the young UCSC team struggled at times against a Cal Baptist team with tremendous size. 6-10 Opposite Shaun Dyk had 14 kills for the visiting Lancers, and 6-3 Outside Hitter Ivan Topchiysky also had 14.

The team plays its next match Tuesday night at home against Findlay University. Match start time is set for 7:00 PM.

Men's Volleyball opens season 1-4

The Men's Volleyball team has opened their season with a 1-4 record, with two of those losses coming against Division I teams.

The team opened its season at Stanford University playing well but eventually falling short in all three games, 30-18, 30-19, 30-24. Sophomore Opposite Brian Gallagher lead the team with 10 kills.

The team's home opener came against Pacific University. Prize recruit Freshman Setter Matt Reynolds dazzled the home crowd, finishing with 38 assists. 32 hitting errors would doom UCSC, however, and the Banana Slugs fell against the Tigers in three hard-fought games, 30-25, 30-25, 30-22.

The team then traveled to the LaVerne Invitational, where they went 1-2. Last year's Western Regional Champion La Verne beat the Slugs dispatched UCSC easily, as did NAIA powerhouse Hope International. UCSC salvaged the trip by beating Division III rival Stevens Tech in four games, hitting on a season-best 34.8% of their shots.
