CAL PAC PLAYOFFS: Women's Volleyball falls short at Dominican

SAN RAFAEL, CA-- The Women's Volleyball Team's season ended Tuesday night in a 3-0 (30-14, 30-24, 30-26) loss at Dominican College in the first round of the Cal Pac Conference playoffs.

The Slugs, playing their first season in the NAIA's Cal Pac Conference, reached their first postseason in school history this season, posting an overall record of 14-13 with an 11-4 regular season conference record. The team was ranked second in the Cal Pac's Southern Division.

With 11 freshmen on this year's team, the future of the program looks bright. The team only had one senior this season; Outside hitter Leigh O'Neill, who led the team in kills.

The entire UCSC community congratulates the team on an outstanding season.

Done Deal: Women's Volleyball fights past Menlo; clinches first Postseason berth in school history

SANTA CRUZ-- The Women's Volleyball team earned its first postseason berth in school history on Friday, defeating Menlo College in four grueling games, 30-26, 33-31, 33-35 and 30-24.

The win, combined with Bethany College's loss to the College of Notre Dame the same night, the Slugs clinch one of the two postseason berths in the Southern region of the NAIA Cal Pac conference. The team may also have won consideration for a highly-coveted NCAA berth.

Senior Outside Hitter Leigh O'Neill, the team's only senior, was honored before the match in a Senior's Night ceremony. O'Neill, the teams leader in kills, then took the court, playing perhaps the best match of her career. She led the team with 20 kills, 3 service aces and an outstanding .447 hitting percentage.

Junior Setter Lily Hallock had 45 assists on the night and Sophomore Middle Jennifer Lewis had 12 kills in the win.

Women's Volleyball begins its run in the Cal Pac playoffs Tuesday night in San Rafael, as they face top seeded Dominican College. UCSC lost the previous meeting between the two conference foes, 1-3 result at Dominican on October 6.

The winner of the rematch will go on to the Cal Pac Finals. Game time is at 7:30 pm.

Winner-take-all: Women's Volleyball to play Bethany College with Playoffs potentially on the Line

When the Women's Volleyball team plays at Bethany College on Saturday night, there may be far more than regional pride at stake.

Going into Friday night, UCSC is ranked just one match ahead of Bethany College in the Southern Division Cal Pac rankings. This creates a number of scenarios in which the team's match on Saturday may become critical. Should Bethany College (9-4 in conference play) defeat the College of Notre Dame on Friday night, UCSC (10-3 in conference play) would then have to beat Menlo College tonight at the West Field to maintain their one match advantage. UCSC would then play Bethany on Saturday, will a loss leading to a tie in the standings.

The team's record currently stands at 13-11 and 10-3 in Cal Pac play, with only two matches remaining.

Women's Volleyball sweeps Mills, Monterey Bay

The Women's Volleyball dominated its two matches this weekend, defeating Mills College at home on Friday 3-0 (30-14, 30-20, 30-19) and then outlasting CSU Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Center on Saturday, 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 30-27).

Freshman Ann Bookout lead the team past the Cyclones on Friday with 9 kills. On Saturday Jennifer Lewis would standout, with 11 kills in only 2 games. Leigh O'Neill would add 8 kills and Lilly Hallock would have 33 assists. Hallock is ranked third in the Cal Pac in assists per game.

The team's record now stands at 13-11 and 10-3 in Cal Pac play. The team plays its last home match of the season on Friday against Menlo College.

Women's Volleyball losses at Notre Dame; now 8-3 in Cal Pac

The Women's Volleyball team lost to Notre Dame de Namur University in three straight games on Saturday, 30-14, 30-20, 30-20, dropping their record to 11-11 and 8-3 in the Cal Pac. defeated Holy Names College in 3 straight games Friday night at the West Field.

Yi Wang of Notre Dame would lead the Argonauts with 21 kills, 6 blocks and 3 service aces. UCSC Senior Leigh O'Neill would lead the Slugs with 9 kills.

The team also lost Friday at home to CSU Hayward, 3-1 (21-30, 30-28, 30-19, 30-19). After taking the first match from Hayward, one of the top teams in the country, a controversial call in the second game would send the Slugs into a tailspin. The call was disputed when the referee overuled a line judge and awarded a crucial point to the visiting Pioneers.

The team plays next this Friday at home against Mills College. Game time is 7:30 pm.

Women's Volleyball defeats Holy Names

SANTA CRUZ-- The Women's Volleyball team defeated Holy Names College in 3 straight games Friday night at the West Field.

Freshman Outside Hitter Amy Strang had 13 kills with 2 blocks and Senior Outside Hitter Leigh O'Neill would add 12 kills to lead the Slugs, 30-23, 30-27, 30-27.

Libby Kamuth had 9 kills to lead Holy Names in the loss.

The team's record now stands at 9-9, with a 7-3 record in Cal Pac play. Those nine overall wins matches the total number of wins the program had last year.

The team plays next Saturday night at Pacific Union College.

Women's Volleyball falls shorts at Hayward

HAYWARD, CA-- The Women's Volleyball team lost at CSU Hayward in three straight matches (30-10, 30-24, 30-22) Tuesday night.

The Pioneers' Toni-Ann Merendino came off the bench to record six kills and 10 digs while starter Ivone Aleman had 9 kills in the win.

Outside Hitter Leigh O'Neill would lead the Slugs with 9 kills and setter Lillian Hallock had 22 assists in the loss.

The Slugs record now stands at 8-9 and 6-3 in Cal Pac play. They play their next match this Friday at the West Field House against Holy Names.

Women's Volleyball dominates CSU Maritime

SANTA CRUZ-- The Women's Volleyball team won its sixth consecutive Match on Friday at the West Field House, overwhelming CSU Maritime, 3-0 (30-12, 30-15, 30-19).

Sophomore Jennifer Lewis had a career-high 14 kills with an outstanding kill percentage of .706. Other standout performers were Senior Leigh O'Neill, who had 4 kills and 5 service aces, and Freshman Brita Class, who had 5 kills in 5 opportunities.

Midway through game 2, the Slugs began pulling their starters, allowing many of their reserves to get significant playing time. Backup setter Jamie Muller had 17 assists on the night.

Assistant Coach Selene Teitelbaum received her first coaching start for the absent Jay Hosack, and now has a career 1-0 record. The team's record now stands at 8-7 and is 6-1 in Cal Pac play.

The team will face stronger competition Saturday night at Dominican College (8-6 overall record). Match start time is at 7:30 pm.

Women's Volleyball defeats Bethany at home; Simpson on the road

SANTA CRUZ-- The Women's Volleyball Team defeated county rival Bethany College on Friday night at the West Field, winning 3-1 (32-30, 30-27, 26-30, 30-28). Freshman Brita Class had 11 kills and 3 service aces in the victory. Junior setter Lillan Hallock had 37 assists on the night.

The following evening the team would head to Redding to face Simpson College in anothe Cal Pac Conference match. The Lady Slugs would again dominate their opposition, winning 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-28).

UCSC is now on a five match winning streak, with all five victories coming against Cal Pac opponents. The team's record now stands at 7-7 overall and 5-1 in Cal Pac play.

Women's Volleyball plays its next match at home this Friday, October 5 against CSU Maritime. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM.

Women's Volleyball Match Cancelled

The Women's Volleyball match against Oregon Tech, originally scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, has been cancelled as a result of Tuesday''s national tragedy. No rescheduling is planned. The team will play its first home match Friday night at 7:30 pm at the West Field House against Notre Dame de Namur University.

Women's Volleyball wins Otter Classic Invitational

MONTEREY BAY, CA-- The Women's Volleyball tam defeated host CSU Monterey Bay to win the Otter Classic Invitational Saturday night.

The Lady Slugs, who had lost to their four match play opponents, would storm back in bracket play, defeating Embory-Riddle, Holy Names and CSUMB to take the championship.

Earlier UCSC had suffered losses to Holy Names (23-30, 20-30, 33-31, 30-28, 15-12), Embry-Riddle (30-11, 30-19, 30-27), Bethany (30-26, 30-27, 30-22) and Monterey Bay (31-29, 30-27, 27-30, 22-30, 15-13).

UCSC's Leigh O'Neill and Lilly Hallock were both named to the All-Tournameent team for their outstanding play.

The team's record now stands at 2-6.

The Women will next play in their home opener against Oregon Tech this Wednesday at the West Field House.

Women's Volleyball at the Whitman Invitational

WALLA WALLA, WA-- The Women's Volleyball team opened their season at 1-2 after finishing in 3rd place at the Whitman Classic Invitational.

The Slugs opened the tournament narrowly losing to Western Baptist College on Friday, 30-29, 24-30, 30-25, 30-22. Pacific Lutheran handed the Slugs their second loss on Saturday morning, 30-22, 30-12, 30-17. But the Slugs would bounce back strong later in the afternoon, dominating host school Whitman, 30-22, 30-20, 30-18. UCSC Freshman Amy Strang was selected to the All-Tournament team.

UCSC Women's Volleyball plays next on Thursday at San Jose Christian.
