Slugs Dominate in So. Cal

Over the weekend the Slugs traveled down south to Pomona, CA to play 4 matches against DIII opponents, pulling out 3 straight victories in 3 games.

On Friday, UCSC was handed its only defeat of the weekend by Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens won in 3; 30-19, 30-20, 33-31. For the Slugs, Briana Williford and Jihan Spearman had 10 kills; Jihan added 1 block and 6 digs.

Friday night was a DIII Independent match-up as UCSC faced off against Chapman University. With Williford leading the way with a .500 hitting percentage, the Slugs defeated the Panthers in 3; 30-25, 30-22, 30-23. Williford had 11 kills and only 1 error on 20 attempts. Senior Brina Mocsny had a great night adding 10 kills and 3 blocks.

On Saturday morning the Slugs showed little signs of fatigue as they went on to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 3; 30-24, 30-26, 30-26. Junior setter Jenna Koch had a great all-around game with 36 assists, 1 block, 7 digs, 3 aces, and 2 kills. All the Slugs came up strong to help pull out this victory. Jihan Spearman led the way with 12 kills, 1 block, and 11digs, while at the libero Melinda Tom had 22 digs with no errors. Briana Williford added 9 kills, while Brina Mocsny and Kim Bernet each had 8 kills and 3 blocks.

In the final game of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, UCSC had all the momentum as defeated Swarthmore College in a quick 3; 30-26, 30-17, 30-19. Jihan Spearman had another double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, while adding 2 blocks at the net.

The Slugs are now 8-12 and face CSU Monterey Bay tonight at 7pm in Monterey.
