Slugs Beat Nationally Ranked Mount St. Joseph

SANTA
CRUZ, CA -- It
was a tough week of competition for the UCSC Women's Volleyball Team, but
they came out ahead finishing 3-2 for the week. First up for the Slugs was
Menlo College at UCSC on Tuesday, October 7th. The Slugs won the first two
games before Menlo fought back and took game three only to lose the forth
set by a two point margin (25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 26-24). Leading the offense
for UCSC was Junior Outside Hitter Katie English who had an impressive 22
kills, 12 digs and 2 aces for the match. Leading the defense for the Slugs
was Senior Libero Melinda Tom who once again joined the AVCA 30 Kill Club
tallying 38 digs for the match.
The Slugs then traveled to the Wild West Shootout tournament hosted by Cal State
East Bay. UCSC dropped the first match to Cal State East Bay (17-25, 12-25, 16-25),
ranked #9 in NCAA Division III. The Slugs battled back against Bowdoin College
defeating them in 5 close games (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10). Senior Outside
Hitter Megan Wisniewski had a career day with 6 blocks and 15 kills followed closely
by Junior Outside Hitter Katie English who had 14 kills and Junior Middle Blocker
Jessica Flood who contributed 11 kills, 7 digs and 2 blocks. Senior Libero Melinda
Tom once again led with 35 digs followed by Senior Defensive Specialist Sophie
Manoukian who had 18 digs.
The real victory for UC Santa Cruz came against College of Mount St. Joseph, ranked
#21 in NCAA Division III, winning by two points in the fifth game (18-25, 25-14,
25-17, 15-25, 15-13). Senior Outside Hitter Megan Wisniewski was the kill leader
for the match with 21 kills and 4 blocks. Junior Setter Amy Knight ran the offense
with 42 assists, 2 aces, 2 kills and 18 digs for the match.
The Slugs could not duplicate their performance against Cal Lutheran and dropped
the match in three straight sets (16-25, 16-25, 20-25). Senior Outside Hitter
Megan Wisniewski had another great showing with 14 kills, hitting .400 for the
match.
