UCSC Women's Volleyball Off to a Great Start for 2009

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The Slugs started the season off right going 3-1 for the season-opening tournament at the Claremont Colleges this weekend.

UCSC dropped their first and only match against #7 Nationally Ranked Carthage College on Friday, September 4th at the Pacific Coast Classic (19-25, 16-25, 22-25). Leading for the Slugs was Senior Outside Hitter Katie English who had 9 kills and 6 digs for the match.

The Slugs retaliated against Fontbonne University taking them down in 3 quick games (25-14, 25-11, 25-14) for their first victory of the 2009 season. Leading for the Slugs was Junior Middle Blocker Lauren Nixon who racked up 13 kills and 4 blocks hitting .579 for the match.

UCSC then faced Lewis & Clark Pioneers beating them in 3 games (25-18, 25-23, 25-22). Leading the way was Senior Outside Hitter Katie English who had 12 kills, 2 aces and 11 digs for the match. Freshman Middle Blocker Ginger Berryman also had a great match adding 10 kills, 2 ages, 2 digs and 2 blocks. Senior Libero Dana Johnson contributed 22 digs, 3 aces and a near perfect passing game to facilitate the Slugs victory.

Last up was host school Pomona-Pitzer who put up a good fight but dropped the match to UC Santa Cruz in 4 exciting games (25-18, 32-30, 23-25, 25-20). The Slugs had 4 hitters with double digit kills thanks to Senior Setter Amy Knight who ran a smart offense tallying 48 assists. Senior Outside Hitter Katie English had a double-double with a team high 16 kills and 13 digs along with 5 blocks and 1 ace. Junior Middle Blocker Lauren Nixon was close behind with 14 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs. Senior Opposite Roxy White had 12 kills, 3 blocks and 2 assists followed by Freshman Middle Blocker Ginger Berryman who contributed 10 kills and 5 blocks. Defensively, it was Senior Libero Dana Johnson who led the team with 19 digs, 2 aces and consistent passing.

It was a great weekend for the Slugs finishing 3-1 to start the season. UCSC will host their first home game on Wednesday, September 9th against NAIA Pacific Union College at 7pm at the West Field House.
