Slugs Win Streak Ends at Cal Lutheran

SANTA CRUZ, CA --The UCSC Women’s Volleyball team faced tough competition this weekend against four top teams in the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) at the Cal Lutheran tournament. First up was nationally ranked and host school, Cal Lutheran. The Slugs were leading the first set until 20-15 when the Regals fought back to win 25-23 on a 10-3 run. The Slugs couldn’t come back and dropped the next two sets 18-25, 18-25. This ended UCSC’s 5 match win streak. UCSC’s leading scorers were Freshman Outside Hitter Chanel Filteau with 7 kills and Senior Opposite Jen Meyers who also added 7 kills for the match. Freshman Outside Hitter Liz Trambley had an amazing game coming off the bench in the second set scoring 6 kills with zero errors hitting an impressive .667 for the game.

Up next was Pomona-Pitzer who had been defeated by UCSC earlier this season. The Slugs took the first two games 25-22, 25-22 but couldn’t finish out the match losing the third and forth sets by two points (24-26, 23-25) and losing the match in 5 (9-15). Leading for UCSC was Freshman Outside Hitter Chanel Filteau who had a personal best match-high 18 kills, 6 digs, 1 solo block and 1 block assist followed by Senior Opposite Jen Meyers who had 13 kills, 2 digs and 2 blocks. The Slugs played tough defensively racking up 106 team digs led by Senior Libero Dana Johnson who had 25 digs followed closely by Senior Defensive Specialist Sophie Manoukian and Senior Outside Hitter Katie English who each had 23 digs on the match.

On day two of the Cal Lu tournament, UCSC faced Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Slugs fought hard in the first set and lost by two points (23-25) and couldn’t rally back losing the next two straight 20-25, 21-25. Leading for the Slugs was Senior Outside Hitter Katie English who had 16 kills, 11 digs, 1 solo block and 2 block assists on the match but percentage-wise it was Freshman Outside Hitter Chanel Filteau who had 9 kills hitting .368 and Senior Opposite Jen Meyers who had 8 kills hitting .316 on the match.

The last match of the weekend was against Redlands, currently leading the SCIAC. The Slugs struggled defensively unable to get a single block against the Bulldogs offense. Leading the Slugs offense was Freshman Outside Hitter Chanel Filteau who had 11 kills and Senior Outside Hitter Katie English who also had 11 kills as well as 10 digs. Leading the defense was Senior Defensive Specialist Sophie Manoukian who had 19 digs. UCSC went 0-4 for the week bringing their record to 18-7 on the season. The Slugs travel to Colorado College next week to play Chapman University, Millikin University and #12 ranked Colorado College.
