The Slugs Win First Match of the Season on the Road

THOUSAND OAKS, CA --
UCSC won their first match against Occidental on Friday, September 10th at the Cal Lutheran Tournament (25-21, 25-18, 25-20). The Slugs came out fired up and would not let down! Leading for the Slugs was Sophomore Middle Blocker Ginger Berryman who had 11 kills hitting .429 for the match. Sophomore Outside Hitter Katherine Grow added 10 kills to the victory. The defensive leader for the match was outstanding Freshman Libero Gabriela Dae who had 18 digs.

The Slugs then faced the home team of Cal Lutheran. The Slugs were unable to keep up with Cal Lu’s fast transition game losing in three games (17-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27). Leading the charge was Katherine Grow who racked up 9 kills and 3 aces.

In their third match of the tournament the Slugs rallied to defeat George Fox in a 5 game thriller (12-25, 13-25, 25-22 26-24 15-6). Taking the team on her shoulders was Katherine Grow who had 30 kills hitting .422 for the match. Leading the back row defense was Gabriela Dae with 26 digs, Sophomore Defensive Specialist Jaime Weber with 15 digs and Sophomore Defensive Specialist Melissa Stoll with 8 digs. Junior Setter Alyssa Trakes put up 52 assists for the come back.

Last up was a very intense battle against Lewis and Clark University. The Slugs made a big run in game one to win 25-15. Lewis and Clark came back to win the second game 25-14. In games 3 and 4 the Slugs took advantage of all their opportunities and took the match. (25-15, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18)

It was a great weekend for the Slugs finishing 3-1 in their second tournament of the season. This weekend the Slugs head to a tournament at the University of La Verne. Their first match is on Friday at 7 pm against University of La Verne.
