2002-2003 News Archive November 11, 2002 SANTA CRUZ -- For the past four season, Senior Setter Lilly Hallock has been the lone mainstay of the UCSC Women's Volleyball Program. During Saturday's season finale against Notre Dame de Namur, Hallock was honored by her coach, teammates, friends and family, the lone Senior on this year's team. "I can't believe to tell you how many coaches have come up to me and expressed how they wished that they had 15 girls like her playing on their teams." gushes Head Coach Jay Hosack. "She is the spark plug that this team needed, often throwing her body across the court to save a ball. This team is where it is today because of her leadership, and [it] will be sorely missed." During her tenure at UCSC, Hallock played under three different head coaches and was teamed with nearly 40 different teammates. In 2001-2002, Coach Hosack's first season guiding the program, she was the lone returning player from the year before. She also spent a season playing for the Women's Basketball team. "There hasn't been consistency with the program until these last 2 years under Jay [Hosack]." Hallock said in regards to all the transistion that took place during her career. "[With Jay], it gives the players something to look forward to." After seeing the the team go 7-25 and 6-26 her first two years of the program, Hallock say the team improve to 14-13 in 2001-2002 and 14-12 this season. During the 2001 campaign the team qualified for the postseason for the first time in school history. Saturday's match against Notre Dame ended in a loss for the Slugs, losing in four highly competitve games to a team favored to win the conference championship this year. Hallock had 29 assists in the loss, and Sophomore Middleblocker April Vogt led UCSC with 8 kills and 6 total blocks. UCSC wraps up its season at 14-12 with a 10-5 conference record. Though the team narrowly misses the playoffs, there are great expectations for the future of the program. Hallock will be the only player lost to graduation, and a majority of the team's key players are in their first or second year. Coach Jay Hosack, meanwhile, continues to recruit some of the best prospects the school has ever seen. Congratulations to the team on a great season!

UCSC would then play Bethany on Saturday, will a loss leading to a tie in the standings. The team's record currently stands at 13-11 and 10-3 in Cal Pac play, with only two matches remaining. ronger competition Saturday night at Dominican College (8-6 overall record).
