Slugs Finish Season With Best Mark Since 1994

The Slugs finished the 2006 season at the DIII Independent Championships at Colorado College with a 4th place finish, not qualifying for NCAA Regionals. The Slugs finished with a record of 14-20, having more wins than they have had since 1994!

Congratulations to Junior Outside Hitter Jihan Spearman who was selected DIII Independent All American Honorable Mention! Jihan Spearman was also voted MVP and was a DIII Independent Player of the Week. Kelsey Buchanan was given the Coaches Award and Megan Wisniewski was voted as Most Improved Player for 2006. Melinda Tom also joined the 30 dig club several times this season.

With all but one player returning next season, the Women's Volleyball team has high hopes for the coming year, not to mention another stellar upcoming recruiting class for 2007.

A Disappointing week for the Slugs Women's Volleyball

It was a disappointing week for the Slugs going winless for 5 matches straight.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11th we played at Holy Names University losing in 4: 25-30, 30-25, 26-30, 24-30.  Leading the team was Junior OH Nicole Payne with 11 kills and 12 digs.

On Friday and Saturday we were at the CSU East Bay Tournament.  First up, we played Notre Dame de Namur (NAIA) and lost in 3: 15-30, 26-30, 20-30.  Leading were OH's Jihan Spearman and Nicole Payne each tallying 6 kills for the match.

On Friday night we played long time rival, CSU East Bay (formerly known as Hayward).   We lost in 3: 24-30, 21-30, 16-30.  Standing out for the Slugs was Junior OH Nicole Payne with 12 kills and only 2 errors on 33 attempts, hitting .303 for the match.  She also had 2 aces, 15 digs and 1 block.  Melinda Tom joined the 30 Dig Club racking up 35 digs.

On Saturday we played Menlo College and lost in 3: 30-32, 22-30, 15-30.  Once again, Nicole Payne led with 11 kills and 1 ace.

Our last match of the tournament was against Dominican University (NAIA) and we played a great match but lost in 5:  27-30, 30-24, 26-30, 30-20, 9-15.  Sophomore Libero Melinda Tom had a career day breaking her own record of 35 digs and setting a new school record with 52 digs for the match!!  Junior OH Jihan Spearman also had a good appearance tallying 20 kills.  Nicole Payne and Gillian McGraw also hit double digits reaching 13 and 11 kills respectively.  Sophomore MB Daniella Reagan had 8 kills and 4 blocks for the Slugs.

Although we had a tough week, the future still looks bright for the UCSC Women's Volleyball team.  5 of our 6 remaning matches are at home and then the Slugs are off to Colorado College for the DIII Independent Championships for a shot at the NCAA Regionals Playoffs.
