Four Slug Water Polo Playes named to the "Superior" Academic All-American Team

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Four Slug Men's water polo players, plus the UC Santa Cruz team at large, were bestowed with 2007 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic Awards, which was announced by Executive Director Bryan Kimbell on Monday, April 7th. (more)

Martinez from Men's Water Polo Selected for Prestigious Health Policy Program in Washington, D.C.

Senior attacker Angel Martinez has been selected for the prestigious health policy program in Washington, D.C. At 12 years old, Martinez was faced dealing with his now 9 year old sister being born prematurely. Watching her struggles and fight for life, promted Martinez to major in health sciences as he earns his way to earning a M.D. Click below for the full story that helped lead Martinez to this great accomplishment.

Men's Water Polo Falls to #7 Pomona-Pitzer 14-8

Outscoring eighth-seed UC Santa Cruz 8-3 in the second half, seventh-seed Pomona-Pitzer took a 14-8 victory over the Banana Slugs in the seventh-place contest. Pomona got out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period, but a strong second quarter from UCSC cut the margin to 6-5 at the half. However, Pomona shut out Santa Cruz in the third quarter to stake an insurmountable lead. (more)

#8 Men's Water Polo Fall to #1 UC Davis

Led by four goals from Nick Arrigo, top-seed UC Davis rolled to a 17-9 victory over eighth-seed UC Santa Cruz Saturday evening. While the Banana Slugs were as close as 5-4 early in the second period, the Aggies went on a 9-1 spurt over the next quarter and a half to take command of the game. UC Davis will meet host Air Force in the semifinals, while UC Santa Cruz faces UC San Diego in the consolation bracket. (more)

#8 UCSC Men's Water Polo Defeates #9 Claremont 11-10

A man-up goal by Devon Allred with 55 seconds remaining in the second overtime period gave UC Santa Cruz the 11-10 victory over Claremont Friday morning in the championship play-in game. Claremont, which led by as many as three goals, had a 6-5 advantage at the half, but UCSC came back to tie the game, eventually taking an 8-7 lead. An even fourth period resulted in a 9-9 contest at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. (more)

Men's Water Polo Ranked #8 in WWPA Championship Tournament

Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 12, 2007) – UC Davis, who set the program record for wins with a mark of 20-6 in the regular season, has been tabbed the top seed for the upcoming Western Water Polo Association Men’s Water Polo Championship hosted by the United States Air Force Academy Friday, Nov. 16 – Sunday, Nov. 18. The Aggies went a perfect 15-0 against fellow WWPA teams to earn the No. 1 seed. (more)

Every week, the WWPA highlights the top performances from the week. Junior left hander Lucas Zepeda was featured for his four goals in the victory over Fresno Pacific. He also had two assists in the game against #3 UCLA. (more)

Slug Water Polo Splits On Second Day Of MIT Tournament

On the second day of the MIT tournament the Banana Slugs split their two contests, losing to Harvard 9-4 and beating Connecticut College 23-3.

The early morning game against Harvard started slow for the Slugs with the Crimson taking the first quarter with a 3-1 lead and then scoring the only goals of the second quarter to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. The  Slugs were able to put two goals up in the third quarter and one in the fourth, but Harvard scored four in the second half to take the 9-4 victory. Overall UCSC shot 4 for 29 for the game. (more)
