Men's Water Polo Ranked #6 In This Weeks Division III National Collegiate Top 10 Poll

In this weeks Division III National Collegiate Top 10 Poll, the UC Santa Cruz Men's Water Polo team was ranked #6 in the Top 10 Poll.

BRIDGEPORT, PA (September 19, 2007) – Six teams can lay claim to being ranked #1 as the September 19 Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10, Division III Top 10, National Collegiate Varsity Top 20 and National Collegiate Club Men's Water Polo polls were released to the media.

In the CWPA poll, three teams are tied for #1 as Bucknell University and St. Francis College (NY) moved into a tie for the top spot with the United States Naval Academy. Navy, which was a unanimous pick as the top team in the league as the Midshipmen earned 100 points in the preseason and Week 1 and 2 polls, saw its uncontested spot as the #1 team in the league erased as Bucknell moved up from third and St. Francis from second place with 95 points to bring parity to the league standings. Princeton University, which fell to Bucknell 13-12 in overtime last weekend, remained fourth in the poll with 84 points, while Brown University moved out of a tie with George Washington University for sixth place in the September 12 poll and into a tie with Johns Hopkins University for fifth place this week as both the Bluejays and Bears earned 76 points. George Washington University slipped to seventh in the poll with 73 points due to the Hopkins-Brown tie at fifth. Mercyhurst was the biggest mover of the week jumping from outside the Top 10 to eighth place with 49 points, while Harvard University remained ninth with 47 points. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology joins Mercyhurst as a new team in the Top 10 as the Engineers jumped to 10th place with 38 points after not receiving a vote last week. Fordham and Iona College, which were ranked eighth and 10th a week ago, fell out of the Top 10 with 34 and 13 points, respectively.

In the Division III poll, Johns Hopkins University completed its climb to the top of the rankings as the Bluejays garnered 98 points to edge out former unanimous #1 selection the University of Redlands (95 points). The ranking marks the first time in nearly a year that Hopkins is ranked #1 as the Bluejays and Redlands were tied with 99 points for the #1 spot in the September 27, 2006 poll. Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and California Lutheran University remained in third and fourth place with 88 and 83 points, respectively. The biggest mover of the week was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which improved from eighth place to fifth place with 78 points to leap over the University of California-Santa Cruz (75 points), Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges (72 points) and Chapman College (65 points) which rank sixth, seventh and eighth in this week's poll. Occidental College (65 points) is tied with Chapman for eighth place and the University of La Verne (44 points) ranks 10th to round out the poll.

The Varsity Top 20 poll saw the University of Southern California's lead as the #1 team in the country widen as the Trojans are a unanimous pick as the top team in the country after grabbing all but one first place vote a week ago. The University of California-Berkeley held onto the #2 spot for a third week with 95 points after trailing USC 99-to-97 last week.

Following the first week of compeition in the National Collegiate Club ranks, the Top 10 teams in the nation remain unchanged as Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, Cal Poly State University, University of Arizona, Florida International University, University of Texas, Williams College, University of California-San Diego, Slippery Rock University and University of Washington stayed #1-10, respectively.

The bottom 20 of the poll saw dramatic shifts as Purdue University leaped from #20 to #12 to start a process which saw only one team (#19 University of Oregon) retain its ranking from a week ago.
