Men's Water Polo Lose Season Opener at MIT

The 2007 UC Santa Cruz Men's Water Polo season opened with a loss to MIT in the Engineer's home opener, 9-13. In front of a raucross pot banging home crowd the Slugs gave up the first goal to fall behind 0-1, but in the course of three minutes goals by Devon Allred, Justin Garver and Brian Fischl moved them ahead 3-1.

The teams traded goals to see the first quarter end with UCSC ahead 4-3. The Slugs started the second quarter slowly repeatedly turning the ball over and failing to score on their shots, but goals by Matt Bischl and Grant Shubin (pictured left) kept the quarter close to MIT's three goals and the teams ended the first half tied 6-6. The teams battled through the third quarter with the second goal for both Devon Allred and Justin Garver, but MIT closed out the quarter with two quick goals to pull to an 8-9 lead. Brian Fishchl scored the Slug's only goal in the fourth quarter, while MIT was able to score four times and end up with the final 13-9 victory.

The UCSC record starts at 0-1, MIT moves to 2-1. The Slugs will face Harvard, Connecticut College and NYAC tomorrow.
