Men's Waterpolo Ranked 4th for CWPA

The Collegiate Water Polo Association released the polls for their Top 10 pics, the Divison III Top 10 and the National Collegiate Varsity Top 20 this week. UCSC Men's Waterpolo is currently ranked 4th among the Top 10 for Division III.

BRIDGEPORT, PA (September 5, 2007) – The United States Naval Academy, University of Redlands and the University of Southern California retained their top spots after the first week of play as the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10, Division III Top 10 and National Collegiate Varsity Top 20 polls were released to the media.

In the CWPA poll, the United States Naval Academy remained a unanimous pick as the top team in the league as the Midshipmen earned 100 points. St. Francis College stayed second with 94 points, while Bucknell University and Princeton University traded spots with the Bison moving up to third place with 90 points, while the Tigers fell to fourth with 86 points. Johns Hopkins University and Brown University also traded spots as the Bears fell back to sixth place with 73 points, while the Bluejays moved up a spot to fifth with 79 points. The biggest movers of the week were Fordham University and Mercyhurst College which jumped into the poll at #7 and #10, respectively, after not garnering a vote in the preseason poll.

Following the closest finish in the history of the Division III preseason poll as University of Redlands, which finished third in the final 2006 poll, edged out Pomona Pitzer Colleges 95-to-94 to earn the #1 ranking in the nation, the second week of polling saw Redlands claim dominant possession of the #1 ranking with 100 points. Pomona Pitzer lost sole possession of second place in the poll as Johns Hopkins University moved up two spots from the preseason poll to tie Pomona for second place with 90 points. The University of California-Santa Cruz slipped a spot to #4 this week with 87 points, while California Lutheran University maintained fifth place with 81 points.

The Varsity Top 20 poll saw the race for the #1 spot tighten as the University of Southern California retained the nation's top ranking with 99 points, but the University of California-Berkeley broke up the Trojans unanimous #1 ranking from the preseason to garner 97 points and hold onto the #2 spot. Overall, the top five teams in the nation remained unchanged as the University of California-Los Angeles (90), Stanford University (84) and the University of California-Irvine (80) held onto their spots.

The bottom five of the Top 10 saw dramatic changes as the University of California-Santa Barbara (76) moved past Pepperdine University (71) for sixth place, Long Beach State University (59) remained ninth, while the University of California-Davis (62) and the United States Naval Academy (51) which were tied for 11th in the preseason jumped to eighth and 10th, respectively.
