Slug Water Polo Splits On Second Day Of MIT Tournament

On the second day of the MIT tournament the Banana Slugs split their two contests, losing to Harvard 9-4 and beating Connecticut College 23-3.

The early morning game against Harvard started slow for the Slugs with the Crimson taking the first quarter with a 3-1 lead and then scoring the only goals of the second quarter to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. The  Slugs were able to put two goals up in the third quarter and one in the fourth, but Harvard scored four in the second half to take the 9-4 victory. Overall UCSC shot 4 for 29 for the game.

In the afternoon game the Slugs came out firing and led the Camels 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.  They kept the scoring march on the whole game to finish 23-3.  Devon Allred let all scorers with four goals and Matt Bischl and Grant Shubin both had three.

In the evening UCSC played an exhibition match against the New York Athletic Club, famed for the Heisman Trophy, but also the 2007 Men's Open Water Polo USA champions. The enthusiasic Slugs played tough the whole game, but ended up losing 9-7.

On Sunday the Slugs will finish the tournament with a game against Brown University.
