 |
| Freshman Annie Keating was one of 7 Slugs to score in the first day of Slugfest. |
SANTA CRUZ, CA The UC Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament was in full swing today, with the Slugs splitting their first day of competition, 1-1. This morning, the Slugs faced off against the Broncos of Santa Clara University. The Broncos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead until Senior Joanne Heraty would answer back and get the Slugs on the board, 1-1. Another Bronco goal late in the first would give Santa Clara the edge at the end of the quarter, 2-1. The next two quarters would belong to the Broncos as they went on to score 8 unanswered goals before Freshman Heather Stewart got the Slugs on the board again in the 3rd quarter. Santa Clara would add two more in the fourth to finish off the Slugs 12-2.
After a tough game against Santa Clara, the Slugs would bounce back in their second game as they matched up against Colorado State. Colorado had already won 2 games earlier in the day, defeating Cal State East Bay (6-5) and Sonoma State (6-4). Freshman Annie Keating and Junior Lindsay Stripling both scored early in the first quarter to give the Slugs an early 2-0 lead. The Rams would answer back with two goals of their own to end the first quarter with a 2-2 tie. But that would be the last of the Ram offense as the Slug defense would step up and hold Colorado scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Junior Lauren Donnelly-Crocker would score what would be the game winner with 5:30 left in the second quarter. Desiree Gant, Heather Stewart, and Kristin Olson would each go on to add one of their own as the Slugs handed the Rams their first defeat of the day, 6-2.
Freshmen keeper Britney Hale finished the game with 5 saves.
