April 26, 2008 #11 Seed CSU East Bay Defeats the Slugs in Their Second Match of the Tournament
CSUEB will play the winner of the Chapman-Colorado State game in the ninth place match-up at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The Pioneers improve to 13-14 on the season while UC Santa Cruz falls to 12-19.
The Banana Slugs took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Kelly Samples and Nila Ward. After CSUEB cut the lead to 2-1, Ward scored her second of the day to put UCSC up 3-1. Kelly Flaherty of CSUEB cut the lead to 3-2 with a 6-on-5 goal with 28 seconds left in the first quarter.
The teams traded goals in the second half to send the game into the half with UCSC up 4-3.
The Pioneers scored the first two goals of the second half to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. UCSC's Rachel Ardohain scored a 6-on-5 to tie the game at 5-5. That would be the last UCSC would see the scoreboad as Pioneer goalie Elise Wilhelmsen made five second half saves and 12 for the game.
CSUEB would score the final two goals of the game, both in the third quarter for the win.
