April 21, 2008 Seedings for 2008 WWPA Championship Announced UC Santa Cruz earns the No. 10 seed of the 2008 WWPA Women’s Water Polo Championship, which will be held April 25-27 at Loyola Marymount University.
Los Angeles, CA (April 21) – UC Davis, who finished the regular season 12-1 against fellow Western Water Polo Association foes, has been tabbed the top seed for the upcoming WWPA Women’s Water Polo Championship hosted by Loyola Marymount University at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Friday, Apr. 25 – Sunday, Apr. 27. The Aggies finished winning 10 straight and enter the tournament 23-8 overall.
Following UC Davis will be defending champion Loyola Marymount with the No.2 seed. The Lions went 18-10 overall on the season, going 8-3 in the WWPA. UC San Diego earns the No. 3 seed and Cal State Bakersfield the No. 4 seed to round out the top four seeds. They each earn a bye into the WWPA quarterfinals. The Tritons went 9-3 against the WWPA and 17-16 overall while Cal State Bakersfield went 10-6 in conference and 18-16 overall.
Rounding out the remaining seeds are No. 5 Santa Clara, No. 6 Sonoma State, No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 9 Colorado State, No. 10 UC Santa Cruz, No. 11 Cal State East Bay and No. 12 Chapman.
The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday when Santa Clara takes on Chapman. The Broncos enter the tournament at 17-11 overall and 13-6 in the WWPA while Chapman was 9-16 and 0-8. The winner will take on Cal State Bakersfield in game five at 1:30 p.m.
The second game of the day will feature Sonoma State taking on Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves finished the season 12-15 overall and 7-7 against the WWPA while CSUEB went 12-13 and 4-10. They will play at 9:45 a.m. and the winner will take on UC San Diego at 2:45 p.m.
Game three will feature Cal State San Bernardino taking on UC Santa Cruz at 11:00 a.m. The Coyotes, who are 15-16 and 4-8, enter the tournament with an impressive overtime win over No. 17 UC Santa Barbara. UC Santa Cruz is 12-17 overall and 4-10 in the WWPA. The winner will face host LMU at 4:00 p.m. in game seven.
The final first round game will feature Cal State Monterey Bay taking on Colorado State at 12:15 p.m. The Otters had an impressive turn-around season in 2008, going 16-11 overall and 5-8 against the WWPA. Colorado State went just 9-24 overall but 7-13 against the WWPA. UC Davis awaits the winner in the final game of the day at 5:15 p.m.
