Slug Water Polo Ranked No. 8 in Preseason Poll
SANTA
CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Women's Water Polo team received 66 votes and a No. 8 ranking in the Division III Preseason Poll released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The Slugs finished the 2008 season ranked No. 4 in Division III with a 3rd place finish at the Division III Championship hosted by Connecticut College.
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, which concluded the 2008 season as a unanimous No. 1 selection in the final Division III Poll, once again earned 100 points to be a unanimous No. 1 pick in the 2009 Preseason Division III Poll.
Pomona-Pitzer, which took over the No. 1 spot in the polls on April 30, is followed by California Lutheran University, California State University-East Bay, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, Occidental College, the University of Redlands, Chapman College, the University of California-Santa Cruz, Whittier College and the University of LaVerne in the Top 10.
The Slugs hope to move up the rankings this year behind the leadership of Seniors Heather Stewart and Annie Keating, both were named Second Team All-Tournament at the Division III Championships. The Slugs are also returning Junior standout Nila Ward, who received First Team honors at the 2008 Championships.
