Slugs Battle against Top Teams

HAYWARD, CA -- The UCSC Women's Waterpolo team competed in the Pioneer Shootout this past weekend traveling to Hayward where they went 1-2. The Slugs opened the tournament with a close loss to Whittier College (then ranked #2). Whittier gained some ground in the second quarter scoring three goals, but UCSC was able to fight them off behind goals by Senior Carrie Guilfoyle and Lizzy Ryan.

At the half, UCSC held onto the lead, 5-4. Early in the second half the Slugs came out firing behind freshman center Chelsea Myer's goal with 6:05 remaining. The poets answered back with a goal of their own to keep them within one as the teams took it to the final quarter. Whittier tied the game early on then took a 7-6 lead with just under 5 minutes left to go in the match. The Slugs were held scoreless in the fourth quarter, as the poets dumped in 2 more goals in the final 2 minutes of play to extend the final score 9-6.

UCSC's first and only win of the tournament came on Sunday afternoon against Pomona-Pitzer (then ranked #3). Despite first half goals by Lindsey Stripling, Lizzy Ryan, Chelsea Myers, and Carrie Guilfoyle, Pomona held onto a 5-4 lead at halftime. In the third quarter another Lizzy Ryan goal kept the Slugs in the game, 5-6. Minutes later Megan Gaynor tied the game with her first goal of the day, and Cara Hipskind scored the go ahead goal with just :15 seconds to go as the Slugs held a 7-6 lead going into the final quarter. Women's Water Polo Mid-Season:
UCSC To Host the Collegiate DIII Tournament

WWP Slug Aims for Collegiate DIII

TAKING AIM: UCSC will be hosting the Women's Water Polo Collegiate DIII Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 2. Be There!

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- It's mid-way through the season and the Women's Water Polo team is already doing better than Coach Cima expected. With a team comprised of young and athletic talent, these girls play many minutes of fast and strong play, but it's a few mistake-filled minutes that has cost them a couple of games.

Despite these losses, the team is doing well and further along than they had projected to be. They have a strong and solid schedule for the remaining half of the season as the Slugs will be on the road throughout April playing strong DIII teams along with some local and Div. I teams like Santa Clara and San Jose State. All of these games lead up to the focus of their season -- the Div. III tournament, which will be held at UCSC April 30th through May 2nd.

Look forward to hearing more about the success of the Women's Water Polo team during the second half of their season.

Women's Water Polo Year in Review: UCSC finishes in 7th place at WWPA Championships

The Women's Water Polo team finished its 2003 campaign on a high note, finishing in 7th place at the Western Water Polo Association Championships this past weekend, hosted by Cal State Bakersfield.

Junior Emily Erskine, UCSC's top scorer all season, lead UCSC at the championships, scoring six goals in three matches. Senior Parisa Forouhi finished her career with four goals at the championships.

In their second match, the team lost a heart-breaking 9-8 decsion to Division II CSU San Bernadino. UCSC lead most of the way, and came within one with :28 remaining but a late charge fell just short. Forouhi scored three of her goals in the match.

The trip was salvaged, however, with a 10-6 victory over CSU Hayward. Erskine lead UCSC with four goals, and a tough defense held Hayward to a mere seven shots on goal.

Despite their 6-26 record, earned mostly against Division I and II programs, the future of the program looks bright. Twelve of the Seventeen players on this year's roster were Freshmen or Sophomores, and the recruiting classes of Head Coaches Randy Whitchurch and Alan Cima continue to get better every year.

Women's Water Polo: Year in Review

The Women's Water Polo completed its season coming in 4th place at the Division III Collegiate Water Polo Association Championships at Macalester College, and coming in 4th place in the Final National Poll.

The team easily won the first two games of the Championships, defeating host Macalester, 14-1 and defeating MIT, 12-7. The team lost their third game to eventual champion University of Redlands, 4-10, and lost their ensuing games against Occidental College and Pomona-Pitzer.

The team finished with a record of 11-30, with most of those losses coming against Division I and II opponents.

Two Seniors from this year's team were selected to the US Water Polo Association's All-American team. Senior Maria Zavala made Second team, and will graduate after having mave the team in all four of her years as a player. Zavala also led the team in scoring with 59 goals this year, and leaves UCSC the program's all-time leading scorer.

Senior Jiny Kim made her final year her best. Kim made the All-American First team, scoring 47 goals and setting a tone for the whole team by providing tremendous defense and leadership.

Zavala and Kim are just two of five oustanding seniors the team will be losing to graduation. Senior Wendy Johnson, who led the team in scoring at Nationals with eight goals, finishes her career ranked second on the team in scoring overall with 54 goals. Dana Kreiger-Nelson had 25 and Bekki Cima added 17 to rround out the fab five.

Though the team is losing many of its best players, there are younger teammates who seem poised to fill the void. Sophomore Emily Erskine was third on the team with 52 goals. Erskine's 7 goals against CSU Hayward on February 9th were the most in a single game by any Slug this season. Freshmen Lizzie Ryan and Sally Hansen tied for the lead among first-year players with 10 goals. Those players will be boosted by a strong recruiting class that hopes to push UCSC to even bigger and better things next season.

Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding year!
