SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The UCSC women continued tradition with their opening season race at the University of San Francisco Invitational while the men’s team competed as an NCAA DIII team for the first time. Both were rewarded with 7th place team finishes against strong DI competition including national powerhouse programs Stanford and Cal.
Rebecca Parsons led the Slugs, coming home in 19:43 and 32nd place overall. UCSC showed good team depth with scorers Gabi Cruz, Jessica Meyer, Emily Nee and Anya Ritter all finishing within 50 seconds of Parsons. Lauren Carlton and top returning athlete Mimi Petersen rounded out the Slug top 7 in 20:39.
In the men’s race, junior Tyler Hoyt represented UCSC well with his 28th place finish. Hoyt covered the rolling and wet 8k course in 26:15. Jose Morales, Eddie Strnad, James Ruiz, and Babandeep Singh finished their first college races in scoring positions for the Slugs.
The men and women next compete Saturday Sept. 17 at the UC Riverside Invitational..
