Slugs Finish Third at Redlands Invite
SANTA
CRUZ, CA -- The UC Santa Cruz Women's Cross Country team had another strong showing in Southern California over the weekend. The Slugs finished third, behind Pomona-Pitzer, and Claremont(#26 in NCAA Div. III), with 86 points.
The Slugs were led by Sophomore standout Mikayla Murphy, who won for the second week in a row in a course record 22:36 on the University of Redlands campus 6k course. The time matches her 6k school record set last year at the Gator Invite. After staying with the leaders over the first mile of the course, Murphy pulled away for a twenty five second victory.
Senior Carina Hendricks posted another fine 5th place finish, with a lifetime PR 24:07. Top Freshman Jenny Cain had a huge day, ending up 12th overall in 24:31. Rounding out the scoring for the Slugs were Haliey Stiers(SO) and Rosie Spinks(SO) in 36th and 41st.
Kelsey Shields(FR) and Miriam Hartig(JR) finished off the Slugs top seven with top 50 performances. Once again the Banana Slugs had a solid showing from top bottom. Adrienne Bell(SO), Raeann Davis(JR) and Malia Nanbara(SO) all had strong races on a slow, turn filled 6k course.
After three races in as many weeks, the Slug Harriers will enjoy a much deserved weekend off. After that comes two huge races in a row; the Stanford Invite on 9/27, and the Willamette Invite on 10/4.
