Slugs Travel to Oregon to Compete in Charles Bowles Invite

SALEM, OR -- Mikayla Murphy (So, San Luis Obispo, CA) once again led the way for the Slugs on Saturday at the Charles Bowles Invite hosted by Willamette University. Murphy traded the lead with Willamette's Maddie Coffman for the last mile of the Women's Cardinal 5k race, eventually finishing second overall in a school record 17:41.46. Murphy took 27.26 seconds off her previous best of 18:07.80. The Slugs finished 12th out of 28 teams in what is perennially the largest DIII meet in the West. Six out of the eight Slugs that raced ran lifetime bests for 5k.

Also entering the record books were Carina Hendricks (Sr, Santa Rosa, CA) and Jenny Cain (Fr, Newport Beach, CA). Hendricks finished 35th in a lifetime best18:53.45, Cain was 58th in 19:26.71; both times make the UCSC top 10 for the Willamette 5k course. Kelsey Shields (Fr, Ramona, CA) crossed the line 113th in a lifetime best 19:55.46. Maggie McManus (Fr, Santa Rosa, CA) finished the scoring for the Slugs in 132nd with a lifetime best 20:02.82.

Hailey Stiers (So, Fresno, CA) ran 20:16.04, with Adrienne Bell (So, Northridge, CA) and Rosie Spinks (So, Malibu, CA) running lifetime bests in 20:41.97 & 20:47.77. A total of 288 runners entered the Women's Cardinal 5k Race.
