No. 6 Ranked Slugs Run Well at Bronco Invitational
SAN
LUIS OBISPO, CA -- After
shaking up their schedule, the Slugs ran in what ended up being the largest collegiate
cross country meet on the West Coast this past weekend. The Bronco Invitational,
in only it's third year, was once again very competitive. As the lone NCAA DIII
team in the race, the UC Santa Cruz women finished 13th overall in the Women's
Invitational 5k. 12 of the 17 teams in the field were NCAA DI programs, with Long
Beach State taking the team title over host Santa Clara.
The UCSC women scored 334 points, just behind DI Fresno State. As has been the
case all season, the Slugs were led by Mikayla Murphy (So, San Luis Obispo, CA)
who broke her school record set just two weeks ago. Murphy finished 8th overall
in 17:39 after a very fast paced opening mile. Running under 19 minutes for the
second time this season was senior Carina Hendricks (Santa Rosa, CA). Maggie McManus
(Fr, Santa Rosa, CA) ran her second personal best in as many races, finishing
in 19:35. Finishing the scoring five for the Slugs was Hailey Stiers (So, Fresno,
CA) and Jenny Cain (Fr, Newport Beach, CA) in 19:49 and 19:55. Kelsey Shields
(Fr, Ramona, CA) finished in 20:17, followed by Adrienne Bell (So, Northridge,
CA) in a personal best 20:39.
The Slugs also entered a "B" team in the women's open race, where they finished
7th out of 9 teams. Cynthia Toth (So, Carmel, CA) lead the way for a slew of season
best performances, running 20:52. Close behind was Adi Ruvalcaba (Fr, Prundale,
CA) in 20:57, with Team captain Raeann Davis (Jr, Willits, CA) finishing in 21:15.
Jennifer Jones (Fr, West Covina, CA) had a great day running 22:07, with Sarah
Finder making her season debut in 25:21. Next for the Slugs is the Shoreline Open
on Saturday 10/25. The Open is mostly a post-collegiate meet sponsored by the
Asics Aggies Running Club. It will mark the last race of the regular season before
the NCAA DIII West Region Championships on November 15th in Salem, Oregon. The
Slugs are currently ranked 6th in the West Region.
