UCSC Slugs Are Starting Off Strong
IRVINE, CA -- The Women's Cross Country team traveled down south Saturday to race in the UC Irvine Invite, finishing 4th out of 11 teams in the Women's "B" race. The team scored 95 points, one point ahead of 5th place DIII West Region team Pomona Pitzer. Things looked a little different up
front for the Slugs on Saturday; junior standout Mikayla Murphy ran on her own in the "A" race, comprised of mostly Division I schools.
"Last year Mikayla won the "B" race by 21 seconds, so we needed to make sure she had competition this time around" explains Head Coach Adam Boothe. "Obviously our score was higher without (Mikayla) in the race, but these early season meets are more about getting in competitive races then the final result." Murphy finished ran 18:30 on the 5k course around the UC Irvine campus, good for 22nd overall.
With Murphy's absence, two freshmen led the way for the Slugs; Jessica Meyer and Rebecca Parsons finished 17th & 23rd in 19:41 and 20:02. Sophomores Jenny Cain and Kelsey Shields were next across the line in 31st and 32nd place, with Junior Hailey Stiers finishing off the scoring for the Slugs in 44th.
After a two-week break from racing, the team will race in the West Region Preview meet on the Pomona-Pitzer campus on Saturday, October 3rd. The meet will feature a number of DIII team from the West Region. (rankings)
