Slugs Place 2nd at the Willamette University Grass Course Invitational

Adam Boothe
SALEM, OR -- -UCSC cross country traveled north to the Willamette University Grass Course Invitational with two objectives: compete against some of its regional rivals for the first time this season, and gain race experience on the same course where the 2010 Western Regional Championships will be held. They accomplished both with their 2nd place finish. Willamette University—the 4th ranked team in the Western Region—won the meet, while the Slugs beat regional competitors Linfield, Pacfic (Ore) and Pacific Lutheran.

Freshmen Katie Lewis once again was the top slug runner with a very impressive 5th place finish. Battling throughout the race with a pair Willamette runners, Lewis covered the 5k of rolling hills and wet, thick grass in 20:01.

The UCSC pack followed close behind. Emily Nee (Soph) finished 12th in 20: 24. Freshmen Mimi Petersen made her collegiate debut and over the race’s last mile, moved up easily through the small field to finish 16th place in 20: 32. Gabbi Cruz (Soph), 20th in 20:44, and Jenny Cain (Jr), 22nd in 20:53 rounded out the team scoring and secured the Slug’s 2nd place team finish. For a full recap, click here.

UC Santa Cruz looks to continue to their strong start to the season this Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.
