Slugs Place 6th at the Gator Invitational
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- -The UCSC women’s cross country team finished 6th of 17 teams at this past Friday’s Gator Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State at Golden Gate Park. Freshmen Katie Lewis’ 14th place finish, in a time of 23:27 over the 6K course, led the Slugs strong showing against Division I schools, Santa Clara University St. Mary’s, San Jose State, and DII schools San Francisco State, Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State. Santa Clara won the meet with St. Mary’s 2nd while the Slugs finished in front of DI San Jose State who was 8th.
Behind another team leading performance from Lewis, the Slugs again showed their solid depth with a 61 second gap between Lewis and 5th scorer, Jenny Cain (Jr). With their consecutive finishes, Mimi Petersen (Fr), 24th in 23:48 and Emily Nee (Soph), 25th in 23:49, had their best showings to date this season. The final two scorers also finished in consecutive places—Gabi Cruz (Soph), in 44th place in 24:25, and Jenny Cain in 45th with a time of 24:28. Rounding out the Slug top seven were two more underclassmen, Lauren Carlton (Soph) and Amanda Speedy (Fr). All together the team’s top seven had three freshmen, three sophomores and one junior.
