Slugs Place 2nd at the Bronco Invitational
SUNNYVALE, CA -- -UC Santa Cruz women’s cross country posted their best performance of the season with a 2nd place team finish out of 20 teams in the Bronco Invitational’s open section. Under cloudy skies and on a fast and flat course for the first time this season, the Slugs comfortably outdistanced the top runners from multiple DII schools as well as San Jose State and the “B” teams from other DI programs. Chico State’s “B” team finished first overall in the open section.
Crossing the line only seconds apart, freshmen Mimi Petersen, sophomore Emily Nee and freshmen Katie Lewis lead the way with personal bests and their first career sub-19 minute clockings. Petersen’s 18:55, Nee’s 18:57 and Lewis’ 18:58 earned them 12th, 15th and 16th place finishes. Close behind and running a collegiate best time of 19:17, Jenny Cain (jr) finished 28th overall. Gabi Cruz (soph) completed the team scoring with her 44th place finish in a personal best time of 19:36. Seniors Hailey Stiers and Danielle Breski rounded out the top-7, clocking 19:51 and 20:33 respectively. Close behind and showing continued improvement were freshmen Anya Ritter and Amanda Speedy.
Coach Aaron Jacobsen was pleased with the results but even more so with how the team competed. “They went out smart but aggressive and then kept pushing together through the middle of the race. It was great to see the top three coming down the finish together and our 4th and 5th runners narrowing our finishing gap to only 41 seconds. ”
Currently ranked 9th in the West region, the Slugs full squad returns to competition for the regional championship meet on Nov 13 in Salem, OR.
