REDLANDS (1-17) – The Banana Slugs continued their four-game road trip as they took on University of Redlands in Redlands. The Banana Slugs hit seven three pointers in the first half to win 84-56 over the Bulldogs.
Tonight's game was a rematch of a game that was played on December 1st in Redlands the Bulldogs won 80-74. Both teams lost their last game. The Banana Slugs lost 83-74 to NAIA member Pacific Union College in Angwin on Monday while the Bulldogs lost 93-84 to California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Saturday.
In the first half, the Banana Slugs started the game on a 21-0 run capped by a Tyler Klingenbeck layup with 12:20 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the half at thirty-one, at 45-14, on a Sam Gabbard free throw on 3:26 left in the half. The Bulldogs would go on a 12-2 run, capped by a Jesse Grabow three-pointer with 1:19 left in the half, to trim the Banana Slugs lead to 47-26 at halftime.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs expanded their lead and gained their largest lead of the game at thirty-six, at 74-38, on a Tre Weston layup with 7:44 left. The win for the Banana Slugs was their fifth in their last six games as they improved to 13-6.
Andrew Jones, off the bench, and Weston each had a game high fourteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Tyler Klingenbeck, off the bench, had thirteen points and Gabbard had eleven pointsto go with a career-high 17 rebounds in the win. Allen Quintero, off the bench, had thirteen points for the Bulldogs.
The Banana Slugs shot 47.1% (32-68) from the field, 50% (11-22) from the three-point line and were 69.2% (9-13) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 29.7% (22-74) from the field, 29.6% (8-27) from the three-point line and 50% (4-8) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twelve turnovers by the Bulldogs scoring fourteen points off the turnovers while the Bulldogs' defense forced fifteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring fifteen points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded University of Redlands 55-36 and the Banana Slugs had twenty four more points in the paint (42-18) than did the Bulldogs.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be next Wednesday as they take on University of La Verne in La Verne at 7 pm.
