OVERLAND PARK, KS - Another turn of the calendar gave another honor for UCSC's men's basketball team.
Senior Tre Weston was voted the Association of Division III Independents men's basketball Student-Athlete of the Month for January. The senior ended the month averaging 17.3 points and 8.0 rebounds as UC Santa Cruz went 5-2 during the month.
"Tre has been in a great place mentally since the start of the New year. When he is aggressive he takes our team to another level," said head coach Ron Dubois.
Weston, a one-time Player of the Week during the month, shot 58.2 percent from the floor and helped lead the Banana Slugs to their first winning season in six years. The forward had a month-high 24 points with 11 rebounds on 11-of-18 shooting in a victory over Simpson (Calif.) on January 8th. Weston also recorded 24 points and ten rebounds at Pacific Union on January 15th. The senior also poured in 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting in the Banana Slugs' win at La Verne on January 24th.
It's the third straight monthly award for the Banana Slugs, and first for Weston after teammate Sam Gabbard won the previous two.
The Banana Slugs close the regular season with home games Wednesday the 7th against Cal Lutheran and Sunday the 11th vs. Simpson.
