Second half goal by La Verne holds off Banana Slugs

SANTA CRUZ -  Despite almost double the shots, UC Santa Cruz couldn't convert their chances in a 1-0 loss to La Verne.

UCSC goes to 2-7-1 while La Verne improved to 5-5-1.

The Banana Slugs dominated possession, tallying 15 shots to eight for the visitors as well as five corner kicks to none. However, both La Verne's goalkeepers stepped up to deny UCSC time and time again with seven total saves.

James Allison almost got UCSC on the board in the 26th minute. He got on the end of Jacob Myers Norys's pass after his long twisting run, but the shot from ten yards went off the post and the Leopards cleared it away.

The second half had the Leopards getting a little better possession, but UCSC held and continued to press forward.

However, it was the visitors that got on the board first. Johnny DeRueda finished a half-volley in the 67th minute for what would be the game's only goal.

UCSC kept making incursions in the last 23 minutes. Lukas Holocher's 86th minute free kick was smothered by goalie Tristan Polakowski in the final shot on goal for the Slugs.

Myers Norys's last-second shot went wide of the left post and the Leopards survived.

UCSC regroups for their first-ever visit to Chico State when they take on the Division II Wildcats on Saturday.
