Slugs fall to Stanford University

PALO ALTO, CA -- UC Santa Cruz Men's Volleyball was defeated by the Stanford Cardinals.  The Slugs lost in three sets with the following scores: 18-25, 20-25, 12-25.

Senior Outside Hitter Salvatore LaCavera led the team with 9 kills (0.111 pct).  Sophomore Setter Blake Chadwick and Junior Setter Steven Crane contributed a combined 22 assists.

UCSC held their own in the opening set against the Cardinals for most of the game.  With strong serve reception and defense, the Slugs went toe-to-toe until a key service run by the Cardinals created an unclosed gap.  The Slugs bounced back from a first set loss and once again held tight through most of the second game.  Key performances by the UCSC Middles, Branden Torado and Jorge Reyes, allowed the Slugs to explore their offensive range.  Once again, a big service runs in the end of the second set and early in the third allowed Stanford to maintain its dominance in the match.  A respectable early season performance by the Slugs against on of the Top Division I programs in the country!

This loss brings their overall record to 0-3 (0-0 D-III, 0-0 CVC).

The Slugs square off against their Alumni, who look to bring an  experienced, all-star cast of former All-Americans and NCAA semi-finalist/finalist players.  The Slugs square off against each other on Saturday, January 19 in the West Field House at 7:00 PM.
