Garin earns All-American honors at NCAA Championships

SHENENDOAH, TX - Senior Ivan Garin finished represented UC Santa Cruz well at the 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming championships, ending up with three top-eleven finishes.

On Wednesday, he qualified for the 50 Yard freestyle finals with a school-record 20.09 time. In the finals, he placed fifth in a time of 20.15. Oliver Smith of Emory repeated as National Champion with a time of 19.55.

On Thursday he placed third in his 100 Butterfly heat with a time of 48.83, missing the finals by just 0.06 seconds. He placed 3rd in the consolation final to finish 11th overall.

On the final day of the meet, Garin qualified for the 100 free final in a time of 44.72. He placed fourth in the final with a PR of 44.27, just 0.01 off Ben Ferguson's school record set in 2009.

Garin was named All-America for his top-five finishes and Honorable Mention All-American for his 11th place showing in the 100 Fly. He earned 35 points to singlehandedly put UCSC in 21st place overall. It was the school's best showing at the championships since 2009 where they placed 19th with 49 points. Emory won its first men's championship scoring 438 points.
