Wetzell to compete in 2018 Oceania Swimming Championships

Swimmer Vernon Wetzell will compete in the 12th Oceania Swimming Championships next month, representing Samoa.

The championships will take place June 24–June 29 in Papua New Guinea.

Wetzell, whose father is Samoan, first got in touch with the Samoa Swim Federation in high school while visiting relatives in Samoa.

"During my freshman year at UCSC I was in contact with them and they agreed my times were fast enough to attend the Oceania games. I have been in contact with them since," he said.
"I am extremely excited to compete on the international level and I am looking forward to the competition it provides."

The junior PR'd in both the 50-Yard and 100-Free with a times of 21.47 and 47.24 at this year's Pacific Coast Swimming Conference championships. His time of 59.18 in the 100 Breaststroke at the meet was 8th best in school history.

Wetzell is the first UCSC swimmer in a major international competition since alumnus Ben Weston won gold in the 1500M freestyle at the 2001 Maccabiah games.
