Slugs Cruise Past Pioneers

The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs ran their win streak to five games with a 73-42 win over the Pacific Union Pioneers behind sharp three point shooting, dominant inside play and stifling team defense.  The Slugs rained 3's on the Pioneers throughout the game as six different players scored from beyond the arc lead by Ortiz (9pts) and Mofsowitz (13pts) with three each.

Ortiz got the Slugs off to a quick start making three long range jumpers in the opening minutes as the Slugs raced to an 11-2 early lead.  When the Pioneers stretched their defense to cover the outside shooters, the Slugs were able to get the ball to Mackey behind the pinpoint passing of Marquez, Gregg and Parrish who had 2 assists each.

Mackey simply dominated the smaller but plucky Pioneers. Mackey got her second triple double of the year racking up 21 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocks.  With Mackey controlling both ends of the floor the Slugs rolled to a 39-16 half time lead.  This forced the Pioneers to double up on Mackey, which opened up opportunities for others including Giovannetti, Fitzgerald and Marquez, who finished with 10, 8, and 7 points respectively.

Scarbrough, Gregg, Marquez and West put on a tough defense that forced the Pioneers to turnover the ball which resulting in 25 points for the Slugs.  UCSC held Pacific Union to 26% shooting for the game (16% in the first half), 20 forced turnovers and 13 blocked shots.  When the Pioneers were able to create an opening and get to the basket Mackey was there to erase the attempt.

This was an excellent overall team effort. Next on the schedule are tough back-to-back games against William Jessup in Rocklin on Friday February 17th and then a home against UC Merced on February 18th.
