Pioneers Top Banana Slugs

ANGWIN (9-14) – The Banana Slugs played their fifth match in a row away from West Field House as they took on Pacific Union College. The Pioneers topped the Banana Slugs 3-1.

These two teams played each other on September 7th in Santa Cruz with the Pioneers defeating the Banana Slugs 3-1. In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to University of Puget Sound on Saturday in Thousand Oaks while the Pioneers won 3-0 over West Coast Baptist College in Oakland on Friday. 

In the first set, the Banana Slugs earned their largest lead of the set at one, at 1-0, on a Kate Lyon kill. The Pioneers would gain the lead for good, at 2-1, on a Banana Slugs' set error.  The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the set at nine on two occasions; the second occasion at 17-8 on a Banana Slugs' attack error. From there, the Banana Slugs would go on a 9-2 run, capped by an Erica Allen kill, to trim the Pioneers' lead to 19-17. From there, the Pioneers finished the set on a 6-2 spurt, capped by a Morgan Spencer kill, to win the set 25-19 and the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the set at two, at 5-3, on a Banana Slugs' service ace. The Pioneers would take the lead for good, at 7-6, on a Morgan Spencer kill. The Pioneers would expand their lead to four, at 16-12, on a Banana Slugs' service error. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on three occasions; the third occasion at 21-20 on an Alexandria Everett kill. The Pioneers would score the final four points of the set to win the second set 25-20 and would take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Pioneers would start the set on a 5-2 spurt, capped by a service ace. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the set at five on five occasions; the fifth occasion coming at 18-13 on a Spencer kill. From there, the Banana Slugs would on a 12-5 run, capped by a Lyon kill, to win the third set 25-23 and trimmed the Pioneers' lead in the match to 2-1.

In the fourth set, the Pioneers would start the set on a 7-2 run capped by a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would come as close as three, at 7-2, on a service ace. The Pioneers would take their largest lead of the set, at ten, at set point, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Pioneers won the fourth set 25-15 and won the match 3-1.

For UC Santa Cruz, Lyon had a match high sixteen kills and for Pacific Union, Amanda Loeffler had thirteen kills. Krysti Photias had a match high twenty seven assists for UC Santa Cruz and Athena Abary had twenty six for Pacific Union. Photias led the Banana Slugs with fourteen digs and Audrey Uyemura had a match high twenty three digs for the Pioneers.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .122 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .257 while Pacific Union had a .220 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .367. The Pioneers had seven fewer errors (25-18) than did the Banana Slugs.

The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Tuesday as they take on Simpson University in Redding. First serve is set for 7 pm.
