REDDING (9-19) – The Banana Slugs played their second match in a row against NAIA competition as they took on Simpson University. The Banana Slugs held the RedHawks to below a .120 hitting percentage as the Banana Slugs swept the RedHawks 3-0.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to Pacific Union College on Wednesday in Angwin while the RedHawks lost 3-0 to Providence Christian College in Pasadena on Saturday.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on a 9-3 run capped by a service ace. The RedHawks would come as close as three, at 12-9, on an assisted block by Aimee Belleville and Ashley Job. The Banana Slugs would gain a double digit lead, at 20-10, on a RedHawks' attack error. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set, at twelve, at 22-10 on a RedHawks' attack error. The Banana Slugs would win the first set 25-16 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the two teams would play back and forth volleyball for the first eight serves. The RedHawks would take the lead, at 6-5, on a Miranda Cook kill. The RedHawks would gain their largest lead of the set at two on three occasions; the third occasion coming at 9-7 on a Banana Slugs' service error. The Banana Slugs would claw their way back into the set and would take the lead for good, at 10-9, on a Madison Webster kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at six on five occasions; the fifth occasion at set point on a Hailey McDaniel kill. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-19 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the RedHawks would start the set on a 6-1 run capped by a service ace. The RedHawks would gain their largest lead of the set at six, at 14-8, on a Diean Manu kill. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 14-7 run, capped by a Rachel Sveiven kill, giving the Banana Slugs the lead for good at 22-21. The Banana Slugs would win the third set 25-22 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Tatum Novitzky had a match high twelve kills and for Simpson, Belleville had eight kills. Krysti Photias had a match high twenty-six assists for UC Santa Cruz and Kelsey Reibsamen had twenty-one for Simpson. Sveiven led the Banana Slugs with a match high twelve digs and Rylee Houck and Sara Salmon had eight digs apiece for the RedHawks.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .220 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .367 while Simpson had a .117 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .219. The Banana Slugs had eight fewer errors (22-14) than did the RedHawks.
The Banana Slugs will have two matches on their next game day. On Saturday, the Banana Slugs will take on California Institute of Technology at 3 pm and University of Redlands at 5 pm. Both matches will take place in Redlands.
