OAKLAND (10-19) – UC Santa Cruz wrapped up their nine-match road trip as they traveled to Oakland to take on Mills College. The Banana Slugs would win the match 3-0.
This match was the third of the season for the Banana Slugs against the Cyclones. The previous two matches – September 14th at West Field House and September 28th at Kaiser Permanente Arena – were won 3-0 by the Banana Slugs in each match. In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to Gustavus Adolphus College while the Cyclones lost 3-0 to Manchester University in Redlands on Sunday.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs did not commit an error as they won the first set 25-7 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Banana Slugs had twice the number of kills than did the Cyclones while holding the Cyclones to a negative hitting percentage in winning the second set 25-11. In the third set, the Banana Slugs held the Cyclones to a negative hitting percentage while recording seven kills of their own. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-13 and won the match.
For UC Santa Cruz, Claire Okerlund had a match-high six kills and for Mills, Jamie Ziolkowski had five kills. Cassie Nickel led the Banana Slugs with a match high sixteen digs and Amanda Aurelio had twelve digs for the Cyclones.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .232 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .333 while Mills had a .058 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .069. The Banana Slugs had seventeen more digs (48-31) than did the Cyclones.
The Banana Slugs will return for their final two matches of the regular season. The next match will be Friday as they take on Brooklyn College at West Field House. First serve is set for 7 pm.
