Banana Slugs Lose Two on Day One of Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational

THOUSAND OAKS (9-6) – UC Santa Cruz fell 3-0 to NCAA Division III #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and lost 3-1 to the host California Lutheran Regals as they traveled to Thousand Oaks to take part in the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational.   

Match #1 – vs. #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

In the first set, the two teams traded points for the first eight serves. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 13-11 on a service ace by Claire Okerlund. From that point, the Athenas would go on a 13-4 run, and would win the first set 25-19. The Athenas would start the second set outscoring the Banana Slugs 5-1. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one at 9-8 on Isabella Hoglund's kill. The Athenas would never trail and extended their lead to twelve, at set point, to win the second set 25-13. In the third set, the Athenas started on a 9-2 run capped by an Amanda Walker kill. The Banana Slugs would come as close as three, at 11-8,but the Athenas would gain their largest lead of the set at eleven, at match point. The Athenas won the third set 25-14 and won the match 3-0.

Hoglund led the Banana Slugs with eight kills.Okerlund had team-highs of 2 aces, 9 digs and 4 block assists.

Match #2 vs. California Lutheran 

In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first eight serves. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 6-4 on an Okerlund kill. The Regals would outscore the Banana Slugs 7-4 over the next eleven serves to take the lead for good at 11-10 and won the first set 25-15 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 14-5 run capped by a solo block by Grace Pessagno. The Banana Slugs would never relinquish the lead and would win the second set 25-21 to tie the match. In the third set, the Regals would started the set on a 16-7 run. The Banana Slugs would come as close as at 17-13, on an attack error by the Regals. The Regals won the third set 25-20 and would regain the lead in the match at 2-1. In the fourth set, the Regals started the set on a 21-8 run capped by a service ace before winning 25-15 and the match 3-1. 

Okerlund led the Banana Slugs with a season-high fifteen kills to go with two aces.Cassie Nickel added 19 digs and a pair of aces herself. Setter Sinead Beaupain had a career-high 28 assists.

The Banana Slugs will complete their time in Thousand Oaks as they take on Chapman University at 11 am and Whittier College at 1:30 pm on Saturday.
