Santa Cruz Defeats Cal Lu

For the second night in a row, the Slugs shot 50% from the field and held their opponents to less than 35% as Santa Cruz defeated Cal Lutheran 60-50 to run their record to 5-6 for the season. In doing so, the Slugs went undefeated to capture the SCIAC Classic for the second time in three years. Cal Lutheran took their only lead just 32 seconds into the game on a tip in by Aaron Van Klaveren. Trent Reeves answered back with a three. The score would see-saw back and forth in the first 10 minutes of the first half, but the Slugs would take the lead for good on an Aaron West jumper off of a Sam Allen assist with 10:31 left in the first half. For the second night in a row, the Slugs controlled the paint in the first half, outscoring the taller Kingsmen 16 to 6. The high-pressure defense of Santa Cruz led to 10 points off of turnovers as they built a 30-15 lead at halftime. After halftime, Cal Lutheran opened up with a 6-0 run before Tyler Hunt dropped in a three from the right corner. The Kingsmen responded with another mini run to cut the lead to 7 four minutes into the second half. High-pressure defense and the long range shooting of Tyler Hunt expanded the lead to a game high of 16 with 4:58 left in the game. Cal Lutheran would make one more run, an 11-1 to cut the lead to six with 49 seconds left in the game. Forced to play foul ball after that, the Kingsmen never got any closer as Sam Allen and Brent Jacobs calmly dropped in their free throws to increase the final margin to 10 points, 60-50. Aaron Van Klaveren led all scorers with 16 points and also pulled down a game high 12 rebounds, but he was the only Cal Lutheran player to shoot over 40%. Meanwhile, for the Slugs, Sam Allen scored 15 off the bench to go along with his customary 4 steals. Tyler Hunt was deadly from downtown, going 4 for 6 from behind the arc to score all of his 12 points and Jamien Jones had another solid game, scoring 6 points and pulling down 9 rebounds to lead the Slugs.
