The first game of 2012 had a slow start, a great middle and a poor finish as the Slugs dropped an overtime game to William Jessup University, 83-73, Down right away, Santa Cruz got its first lead of the New Year, 14-13 on a Spencer Wells three with just fewer than 12 minutes left in the first half. However, Jessup, led by Andrew Anderson's 12 first half points would take the lead at the break, 32-29. The second half opened up with the Slugs going on a short run. Going on a 22-9 run, UCSC opened up a 51-41 lead on a Sam Allen rebound and put back with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. Jessup slowly cut into the lead as the Slugs suddenly went ice cold from the free throw line and the Warriors heated up from the field. With about 4:30 left in the game, Sterling Shell hit for Jessup and a Warrior was fouled under the basket to earn a 1 and 1 at the line. After the two free throws were made, the Warriors had a 2-point lead. Brent Jacobs tied it up with two free throws just moments later. After a Marqus Crawford bucket for the Warriors, Sam Allen and Tyler Hunt hit back to back threes to give Santa Cruz a 4 point lead with just 1:34 left. With 24 seconds left, Andrew Anderson of Jessup cut that lead to 1, hitting three free throws, and with 3.8 left, he would hit a jumper to tie the game after the Slugs went 1 for 2 from the foul line with 18 seconds left. A long heave by Sam Allen at the buzzer bounced off the rim and the game went into overtime. In overtime, for the second year in a row, the Warriors prevailed. Jessup scored the first 6 points before Nathan Morhi cut into the lead with a lay up. Eventually, that lead expanded to 10 points as the Warriors outscored the Slugs 15-5 in overtime to secure the win. Anthony Anderson led all scores with 23 points for the Warriors. Jordan Wilson added 22 and Preston Bramow scored 16 for Jessup. Sam Allen once again was the top scorer for the Slugs, scoring 14 while Nathan Morhi and Brent Jacobs added 12. Cal Lutheran has gone 1-1 since the December 18 60-50 loss to Santa Cruz, winning their last game 53-45 against Geneva for third place in their own tournament.
