He graduated from UCSC in 2010 with a degree in Marine Biology emphasizing in Ecology.

Nauman was a four year swimmer at UCSC from 2006-2010 and was voted Team Captain in his final year 2009-2010. Despite primarily competing in long distance events during his career, Nauman has expanded his practice to the sprint group in his first year of coaching. Nauman achieved all conference honors three times in his career, twice in the 1650 freestyle and once as a member of the 800 freestyle relay. Nauman's hobbies include swimming, surfing, cooking, and general tomfoolery
