Expectations are high for the 2004 UCSC Women's soccer season. After posting a record of 6-9-2 under first-year coach Michael Runeare, the team dedicated themselves to a rigorous off-season training program. The players have not only grown mentally and physically stronger, but also have the confidence to compete at any level.

And the schedule this season will definitely test the Lady Slugs as they face teams from all over California and the Pacific Northwest. Highlight matches will be against Whittier College (9/11), Willamette University (9/17), Chapman University (10/8), and Cal Lutheran (10/13). New additions to the schedule included St. Olaf College from Minnesota and Lewis and Clark from Oregon.

Senior players Gina Ramirez, Leah Smith, and Skye Vendt-Pearce will lead the team as captains this season. Their leadership and experience as fourth year players will be instrumental in the team's pursuit of a NCAA Western Region playoff appearance.

The forward line will be composed of Senior Skye Vendt-Pearce; Juniors Caitlin Carpenter, Kirstin Horn, Crystal Russo; and Sophomore Kathleen Gardiner.

Distributing the ball through the middle of the field will be Senior Danielle Sassano; Juniors Lauren Philibosian (2003 leading scorer) and Michelle Sharman (2003 MVP); and Sophomores Monica Lee, Claire Gustafson, and Sophomore- Transfer DiDi Ramirez.

The defensive backs will include Seniors Leah Smith and Paige Alumbaugh; Junior-Transfer Rachel Maxwell-Jolly; Sophomores Ivy Whitman and Lauren Lindsay; and Freshmen Megan Cox and Laura Flynn (Alaska's Gatorade Player of the Year).

Sharing time in goal this season are Sophomore Jaclyn Salle and top recruit Freshman Katie Loomis.

In addition to 2nd year Head Coach Michael Runeare and Assistant Coach Mark Hogenhout, the 2004 coaching staff includes Assistant Coach Aileen Nasypany and Goalkeeper Coach Steve Hector. This year's coaching staff is dedicated to using their vast playing and coaching experience to propel the Lady Slugs towards a winning season.
