UCSC vs. Academy of Art

SANTA CRUZ, CA.---The Banana Slugs took to their own pitch again as they faced Academy of Art visiting from San Francisco this past weekend. The game indeed was against a less formidable opponent than some of the top teams in the nation that the UCSC squad had been tested against all year. The preparation showed as sophomore and attacking midfielder Becca Hawkins slotted home a shot in the 6 yard box 27 minutes into the first half for her second goal of the season. The rest of the game saw the Slugs produce more opportunities than they had all year in one game with shots coming from several players and all directions. Sophomore Elaine Stanfield came off the bench to put away her first tally of the season with a left footed shot to the far post. The Urban Knights would not go quietly and were able to tally a goal on a chipped shot by #8 Hannah Emmett who placed the shot just up and over senior Goalkeeper for the Slugs Elle Vermillion. UC Santa Cruz answered back immediately however, and sophomore Roxanne Beltran put a goal into the side netting after an individual effort in the box which showed her resilience. The Slugs were ecstatic and sprits high as the game concluded to secure their first victory of the season. The Girls U-12 Aptos Tide soccer team was present to help shag balls for the game and brought the Slugs some good luck. The Slugs have had key players plagued with injuries this season with the continued missed presence on the field of senior captain #10 Erica Wheeler-Dubin. Unfortunately for the Slugs the win against the urban knights was bittersweet with Captain and key leader #12 Maritza Hernandez going down with a knee injury due to a tough tackle in the 6 yard box in the first two minutes of the game. The Slugs eagerly await to see the prognosis for their Captain.

"We turned a corner today."  Replied Coach Schelhorse.  "We found the back of the net, bounced back and responded to being scored on.  We will see tomorrow if we can carry this momentum into the next game, and it won't be an easy one."
